Vaudeurs and the hilltop hamlets from Vareilles

A walk through the Vareilles Valley to Vaudeurs along a quiet little road, then back via the hilltop hamlets surrounding this pretty valley. A few disused wells along the route, a Bollée windmill and a medieval tower, the Salazar Tower.

Description of the route

Start from the village café (Le Maquis de Vareilles) where you can stock up on supplies for the walk.

(S/E) Take the Route de Vaudeurs (D76) southwards.

(1) Pass the hamlet of Bout d’en haut and continue on the D76.

(2) At the hamlet of Les Vallées, take a look at the covered well and continue on the D76.

(3) Pass through the hamlet of Les Branlards and continue on the D76 to Petit Vaudeurs.

(4) Continue through the Petit Vaudeurs valley on the D76. Near Vaudeurs, take the right-hand fork at the three-way junction and follow the Ru de Vaudeurs on your right until you reach the junction with the Grande Rue.

(5) First turn left then right, pass by the base of the Vaudeurs wind turbine and continue for 50 m past the village hall.

(6) At the recycling points, enter the woods and look for the ruins of Vaudeurs Castle (Sallazar Tower).
Then continue along the path that runs alongside the Ru de Vaudeurs (which only flows in wet years). When you reach the hamlet of Grange Sèche, turn left and then take a 90° right-hand bend.

(7) Continue left onto the Chemin des Monts (as the name suggests, it’s uphill!).

(8) At the hamlet of Les Loges, turn right for a short detour to the edge of the hamlet to see some typical buildings of the Pays d’Othe (round brick pillars).

(8) On your return, follow the D76 towards L’Ormeau through the forest (destroyed by the 1999 storm), cross a road, pass a water tower on your left and reach L’Ormeau.

(9) Continue along the road towards Heurtebise (pond at the exit).

(10) At Heurtebise, continue straight ahead towards Augères (closed well).

(11) Pass through Augères and begin a steep descent to the junction with the D76.

(12) Turn left for a few metres, then turn right and head back up to Méglières via a fairly steep climb.

(13) Continue along the road to the water tower.

(14) Turn right towards Les Thorets. Cross the D20 and reach the hamlet of Cerisiers.

(15) Enjoy the view over the Cerisiers Valley, then continue straight on.

(16) At Le Pilus (a hamlet of Cerisiers), when the road takes a 90° left-hand bend, carry straight on until the first turn-off on the right.

(17) Turn right between the fields, then follow the edge of the forest. At the corner of the forest, continue left, then move away from the edge by turning right onto the Chemin de Cerisiers to Vareilles (beautiful view of Vareilles and the Vanne Valley).

(18) In Vareilles, just before the stream, take the path on the left and pass the Moulin Saint-Rémi.

(19) A few metres before the D76, turn right onto Rue au Gué, pass the wash house and head back towards the village café (S/E).
