Description of the walk

Parking is available at the Place de l'Église car park in Bellot. For access by public transport, see the practical information.

Yellow markings (very sparse)

(S) From the car park, with the church on your left, take the small street on the left. Turn right into Rue du Pont du Ru and cross the small bridge. Continue slightly to the left into Rue de Pourcheret (ignore the markings for a moment). Then turn right onto the path.

(1) Turn left onto Rue du Petit Morin, where you will find the yellow markings again. Cross the two arms of the Petit Morin, pass a beautiful house on your left and you will come to a larger road (D31). Make a zigzag turn to take Rue des Sablons (yellow arrow). After a few dozen metres, you will come to a fork where twoPR®® paths are signposted.

(2) Take the left path towards Les Sablons. The path climbs gently north-west between the meadows. At the edge of a wood on your left, make a right-angle turn to the right. Climb north, walking between meadows and cultivated land, then along the edge of a wood on your right. Enter the wood.

(3) A few metres after entering the woods, turn left (west) onto a smaller path (green and yellow arrows). This will take you to a crossroads.

(4) Take the path on the right. After about 100 metres, turn right and leave the woods. Continue north along the edge between the woods (on your left) and a meadow (on your right). You will arrive at a cultivated plateau.

No markings
There are short sections marked in yellow or red and white.

(5) Take a dirt track on the right, which quickly becomes grassy. Keeping a general eastward direction, cross the plateau, which offers extensive views. Pass at the foot of a wind pump and then go past a small sandstone marker. Reach Montflageol and take the small road on the right that comes from Les Fans. After a few dozen metres, when the road bends to the right, level with a pond, continue straight ahead on the Chemin de la Tuilerie. Still heading east, walk between meadows and cultivated fields. As you approach Fontaine Robert, you will come to a path that is almost perpendicular.

(6) Turn right, following a wire fence on your right. After a few metres, at a fork (enclosure with a metal gate that you can't miss), take the left path. You will come out onto a small road; take this road on the left. Pass the Ferme du Grand Egrefin (sign) and continue along the road.

(7) At the corner of two houses, turn right onto the small road towards Petit Egrefin (sign, yellow arrow). The road runs alongside woods, meadows and orchards. It descends steeply to a place called Le Prieuré (beautiful view of Verdelot, with its imposing church, and the old priory in the place of the same name). Take a larger road on the right and follow it for a few metres.

(8) Before a house with a clearly visible red façade, turn right onto a path (yellow markings) between a fence (on your left) and a wall (on your right). Follow a stream and you will come to a road (D6). First turn right then left to take the Chemin des Martins (sign). Cross the Ru de Moreau and reach another road. Turn right towards Le Geai/Le Corbier (yellow and red and white markings).

(9) Cross the Petit Morin and turn right. Ignore the first road on the right (note the old Verdelot railway station). Leave the marked paths on the left and continue for a few dozen metres on the road, which climbs to a fork.

(10) Turn right towards La Fée (sign). This hamlet can be spotted from afar by a curious building that looks like a lighthouse. At La Fée (houses), continue straight ahead (south-west) on the grassy path. You will reach the village of L'Orme Rond.

(11) At the crossroads, continue straight ahead along Rue du Geai (ignore the yellow and red and white crosses). When the road bends to the left, continue straight ahead (west) along Chemin des Marées and walk past a few properties. Just after the last house, turn right and go downhill, squeezing between a wire fence (on your right) and a narrow strip of cultivated land; keep close to the fence and do not tread on the crops. Cross the D6 road (take care) then turn left and walk along the boundary wall of a property.

(12) At the end of the boundary wall, take the path on the right. This quickly turns left. Walk westwards between meadows and cultivated plots. Le Petit Morin is on the right: it is rarely visible but can be spotted thanks to the trees lining its banks. The bell tower of Bellot church comes into view and the path crosses the D46 (the road taken at the very beginning of the hike).

Continue straight ahead and immediately turn left onto Rue de Pourcheret. Continue along Rue du Pont du Ru and you will reach Place de l'Église de Bellot (S/E).

Notes

To reach the starting point by public transport:
Train to La Ferté-sous-Jouarre station (Transilien line P) then Pays Fertois bus, line 34, stop "Bellot Eglise". Information and timetables: Transilien website and Transdev Marne-Morin website.

In Bellot: grocery store, restaurant.

After heavy rain, the ground is muddy and between points (4) and (5), water flows directly onto the path (you can avoid this by walking through the undergrowth on the left side of the path). It is therefore advisable to do this hike in dry weather and, in any case, to wear appropriate footwear.

A 1:25,000 map is required (at least the one that can be downloaded from the website).

Hike completed by the author on 29 November 2014.

Worth a visit

In Bellot: St-Loup Church (13th-19th century).

Bucolic paths, rivers, pretty villages.

Not on the hike but nearby, beautiful churches in Verdelot and Villeneuve-Sur-Bellot.

Within the Ile-de-France region, the Petit Morin valley is a preserved area with a strong rural and agricultural character. This hike is part of a series of routes lasting between 3 and 4 hours, covering the small roads of this charming valley and communal paths where motorised vehicles such as quads and 4x4s are prohibited (see below for the URLs of the other hikes).

The start is really very pleasant, especially the climb between 1 and 3, with idyllic and bucolic landscapes that are utterly charming. The crossing of the dense forest between 3 and 5 is also pleasant, in a sort of green tunnel, despite the deep ruts (make sure you have good soles on your shoes and don't worry about a few minor scratches...). The flat section on the plateau (between 5 and 6) is also beautiful, especially when the sky is clear with a few large fair-weather clouds (an inexhaustible source of inspiration for those who love to photograph landscapes with a wide-angle lens). But that's as good as it gets, because after that, you'll find yourself in built-up areas and on tarmac (with some beautiful views of Verdelot from the Grand Egrefin farm, however). After Villeneuve and before Bellot, you'll find yourself back on a grassy path, but it's not particularly interesting (just something to give your legs a workout). Be careful! The path indicated after the last house in Villeneuve is completely invisible (did it ever exist?). You have to blindly trust the description and venture into some unwelcoming bushes for a few metres before finding a clear passage along the property's fence. Ultimately, it's a bit long after the first third, which is really nice. In any case, it's nothing like the beautiful Hauts de Verdelot hike, which is more than pleasant from start to finish (except, of course, for the last quarter of an hour on the Verdelot tarmac).

A very pleasant walk, easy to follow. A few sections are a little difficult because they are not well-travelled, but that's no reason to stop. Quiet spots between the fields, peaceful and relaxing.

I combined this hike with the one called "Vallée du petit Morin-Les Hauts de Viels-Maisons", which has a common point in Verdelot, thus creating a pleasant day-long route.
The paths are well maintained, most of them having been mowed recently.
The yellow markings are sufficient, and all changes in direction are clearly indicated.
To complete the practical information, Bellot's grocery shop is closed on Tuesdays and the restaurant is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Hello Guy,

Thank you for your feedback and the information about the vegetation. This phenomenon has been observed on several trails in the Ile-de-France region and is undoubtedly a consequence of the exceptional rainfall last spring.

The local authorities are responsible for maintaining the paths.

I did this route on 17 August 2016, as well as the "woods and countryside around Villeneuve" route. They are both beautiful walks. However, on the first route, the section between points 4 and 5 is practically impassable due to the overgrown vegetation. In September, I have to organise a hike with a group of about thirty people and, given the density of the vegetation in this area, I will have to take a different route, which is a shame unless you can contact the trail markers in this area.

A pleasant short hike.
I can confirm that section 4 is a bit damp, but above all, it is virtually impassable due to the brambles.
Part 5 is not particularly interesting despite the expansive view.

OK, but what justifies the average rating for the description? If you have any suggestions for improvement, we would be delighted to hear them.
