The hillsides of Boitron

This route allows you to explore part of the Petit Morin valley between Boitron and Sablonnière via shaded paths and trails along the riverbank. The heritage of the Brie region is revealed through the villages and hamlets you pass through. "Mezons" or Briard houses built of millstone, with walls jointed with coarse plaster, mills, wash houses, but also through unspoilt and bountiful countryside.

Description of the walk

From La Ferté-sous-Jouarre, take the D407 towards Montmirail. Shortly after Les Cabarets, turn right onto the D55 towards Boitron. Pass through the village and start the walk at the end of the D55, at the junction with the D31.

(S/E) Cross the junction and head down the D55 road towards La Trétoire, Rue du Champ Laurent, for 150 metres.

(1) Head down the path on the left to the hamlet of Bécherelle (caution: cross the Route du Morin, D55).

(2) Turn left onto a grassy path, turn right to cross the Petit Morin bridge, follow the road to the hamlet of Coton.

(3) Turn left onto a hard-packed track (formerly a railway line or tramway in the Petit Morin valley) at the Moulin de Coton and continue to the hamlet of La Forge.

(4) Take the road on the left, then turn onto the second road on the right, which becomes a farm track.

(5) Continue left along a path that winds to the left of the railway embankment at the edge of the meadows. (In wet weather, the ground is very muddy and at the place known as "La Bourbière" the path may be flooded. In this case, head back up to the right onto the hard-packed track of the "railway line") and continue to the Sablonnières cemetery.

(6) Turn left and follow the D222 on the left until you reach the junction with the D31 at the wash house.

(7) Turn left, then quickly veer right towards Marlande and Le Jariel. About a hundred metres further on, take the path branching off to the left, then take the first path on the right leading to the hamlet of Le Jariel.

(8) Continue along the road for 100 metres, then turn left into the hamlet and follow the farm track to Marlande.

(9) Turn left when you reach the road, cross the hamlet and continue to the first path which descends to the left into the woods.

(10) Walk down through the woods to the first crossroads.

(11) Turn onto the path on the right, which then climbs slightly straight ahead to the entrance to Boitron.

(12) Turn left onto Rue du Val, cross Boitron to the crossroads.

(13) Head up Route du Montcet on the right until you reach the cemetery.

(14) Turn left onto Chemin des Poiriers and take the first path on the right, which leads back down to the road to Boitron.

(15) Head up to the left and take the first path on the right towards the wash house. Follow the path to the D55 or Route du Montcet, which you reach via Rue des Marnières.

(16) Cross the road; opposite, there are two paths; take the one to the right of the houses and head down Chemin du Moulin Neuf. Cross Chemin des Vignes and then Route du Montcet in turn to return to the starting point (S/E).

A truly lovely ride through the Petit Morin valley on this very sunny 1st May – plenty of welcome shade – a chance to immerse oneself in nature on this spring day, with an abundance of flowers and birdsong – and a spot of a deer in the undergrowth (5 or 6). There was a cycle race taking place that day, a circular course from Boitron to Sablonnières. The climb (7 to 8) is a bit warm (exposed to the sun) but the gradient isn’t too steep. Don’t miss the path (10 to 11) – the small dots on the map mark a municipal boundary, not a path! Between 16 and DA, take the path that goes down to the right, not straight ahead.
We set off at 11.30 am and returned to the car around 4 pm, having taken plenty of breaks and enjoyed a picnic. A very pleasant walk. Cool and plenty of water crossings (Morin, streams) for the dog.
Alternative routes and points of interest:
- continue straight on from 6, skirting the cemetery then a riding centre as far as Sablonnières, cross the village – pretty church and lovely houses – heading up towards Montcel then return to 7
- take the path running parallel to 13 to 14, which follows gardens and fields in the shade
- between 15 and 16, a remarkably well-maintained wash house

A beautiful hike with lots of shaded areas, ideal in hot weather.
Be sure to wear good shoes, as they are necessary for some parts of the trail.
I took some friends and everyone enjoyed it.

Walk completed on 9 March 2025; it was a mild 8°C at the start, but it gradually warmed up. A pleasant route, with varied scenery (forest, plains, hamlets) and points of interest (Commonwealth cemeteries, wash houses, a mill).
The sections through the undergrowth were sometimes flooded, but fortunately we could get round them without too much trouble.
Lots of animal tracks (horses, deer, dogs); we didn’t come across any motorbikes or quads.

An enjoyable walk overall. A good balance of sections through woods and across fields (pastures) with reasonable elevation changes. Beautiful scenery, mostly rural, and some thoroughly pleasant views. Can be completed in less time than stated (even by sixty-six-year-olds with a good pair of legs). A concern for those using the PDF description they carry in printed form: there is no mention of signposting. Yet the description is too often vague. It’s a shame because the volunteers have done a great job of signposting recently (summer 2023): some markings are still brand new. A problem I readily admit: you see all sorts of colours! Red/white, yellow, yellow/red, fuchsia, green (I may be forgetting some…). But it would be great if, in the guide, it were indicated at the point of a change of direction which route to choose (obviously, one shouldn’t list just one colour in the summary or introduction, but include a mention of the colour at least after each number—fourteen, if I’m not mistaken).
