A history of water on the Saclay Plateau

This is a fairly short hike that allows you to discover two rigoles (small water collection channels) on the Saclay Plateau: the Rigole Domaniale and the Rigole de Favreuse. These rigoles were built in the 17th century to supply water to the Palace of Versailles. The route alternates between woods and cultivated fields, with a rich heritage in Vauhallan.

Description of the walk

Parking is available in the car park at Vauhallan town hall, located just behind the building on the Grande Rue, which can be reached via a ring road (Chemin des Sablons). If the car park is full, look for a space along the Grande Rue. Vauhallan is about 15 kilometres south-west of Paris. Access via the N118 or the A10 then the D144.

No signposts

(S/E) When you leave the town hall car park, turn left onto Grande Rue du 8 mai 1945. After a few metres, turn left into the narrow street that climbs behind the church and goes around it on the left. Pass in front of the church entrance and go back down to Grande Rue.

(1) Immediately turn left at an acute angle onto Rue de l'Église. This street curves to the right, crosses a stream and ends at a crossroads (wash house and fountain on the right).

Red and white + red and yellow markings

Take the street opposite (Chemin de Limon, signposted "Impasse"). The street becomes a path lined with steps on the left and a wall on the right. The path turns left, climbs and leads to a road.

(2) Follow the road to the right. After a few dozen metres (post box on the left, bench opposite), the road turns right. Note a dovecote on the left and pass the entrance to the Benedictine Abbey of Limon on the right. At the fork that follows, take the left-hand path. About 50 metres further on, at the start of a fence on the left, turn left at a right angle and follow the Joliot-Curie stadium. The path descends and leads to a crossroads below the stadium.

Yellow markings
N.B. Between points 3 and 5 below, the purple route on the IGN map is not up to date. Follow the route and description: the paths are real, they are clearly visible on the satellite view and the markings on the ground indicate these paths.

(3) Then turn right (signposted "Chasse gardée"), still alongside the stadium (ignore the signpost indicating a left turn). Enter the woods, follow a stream on your right and ignore a path branching off to the left. Continue along the edge of the woods (on your left) and the field (on your right).

Cross the stream on a wooden footbridge. Further on, cross the stream again, but this time by fording it, and continue along the path through the woods. At the end of a hairpin bend on the right, turn left at a right angle and climb a small embankment to reach a wooden bridge over the stream.

(4) At the end of the bridge, take a wide path on the right. Follow the stream on your right. Note the sandstone markers decorated with a fleur-de-lis at regular intervals on the left side of the path.

(5) Cross a small road and continue straight ahead. Walk with the greenhouses and the bell tower of Saclay church on your left. Walk alongside a farm (on your left) and cross the D60. Continue on the path opposite and you will come to another road at the entrance to the village of Saclay (bridge).

Yellow + red and yellow signposts

(6) Turn right onto the road and cross the bridge over the ditch. When the road bends to the left, turn right onto the path between two metal beams stuck in the ground. Walk across the fields, heading east-northeast. Descend slightly, cross a stream and go up the street opposite with houses on your right.

Yellow markings

(7) At the crossroads at the top of the hill (entrance to Vauhallan), take the bridge over the Favreuse stream (leave theGRP® on your right and continue on the small road opposite (north-east). With meadows on your left and woods on your right, head towards a large building. At the three-way junction, at the corner of the property wall, turn right towards the Ecuries de Favreuse. Follow the wall on your right, pass the entrance to the property and, further on, continue on the road between the Ecuries de Favreuse buildings (on your left) and a farm displaying its organic farming practices (on your right).

(8) At the corner of a wall on the left (tree with a yellow marker), continue straight ahead on the path that leads through the fields towards a wood (ignore the path that branches off to the left). Enter the woods and ignore the first path that branches off to the left. A few dozen metres further on, at a fork, take the left-hand path. This will take you to a cycle path that runs alongside the Favreuse stream. Cross the path and then the stream via a small bridge. Immediately turn right onto a path (not shown on the map) that runs alongside the stream on your right.

Yellow + red and white markings

(9) Cross a small road (bridge on the right, do not take this road) and join the cycle path that curves to the right. Continue south-west on the cycle path, following the stream (on your right) and ignoring the paths on either side. You will see the town below on your left. Shortly after a small green metal gate on the left and before the path bends to the right, take a path on the left (not shown on the map) that descends quite steeply.

At a fork, take the left path and continue downhill. At a T-junction (fence and houses), join theGRP® and turn left. Continue downhill until you reach the Grande Rue du 18 mai 1945. Take the street on the right and continue to the town hall (S/E).

Notes

Between (4) and (6), the path is stable and remains in good condition even in winter. However, in wet weather, the other paths are slippery or very muddy. It is therefore advisable to undertake this hike in dry weather.

Due to the scarcity of signposts, there is very little signage between (4) and (9). It is therefore recommended that you bring a 1:25,000 map (at least the one accompanying this description).

Hike completed by the author on 20 February 2015.

Worth a visit

State-owned gully between (4) and (6). Favreuse gully between (9) and (S/E).

In Vauhallan, on the hike route.
In the village:
- Saint-Rigomer-et-Sainte-Ténestine Church (13th century, with a 6th-century crypt).
- Wash house and fountain, already listed in the 18th century and restored in the 20th century.
At a place called Limon:
- Dovecote (12th-20th centuries).
- Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Louis-du-Temple (20th century).

With nearly 3,500 hectares of farmland and located just 15 kilometres west of Paris, the Saclay Plateau is undoubtedly the largest agricultural area closest to the capital. This situation is changing rapidly with the construction of the Paris-Saclay university and research campus.

A very pleasant walk. It really feels like you’re in the countryside (and you are!).
I’ve done it twice in three weeks and I’ll be back, as it was a lovely change of scenery, gazing out towards the horizon!

An easy walk taking around 2½ hours in beautiful sunshine. The route is interesting as it combines fields, places of interest, small woods and the pleasant village of Vauhallan, where we stopped for a coffee on the way out... and a drink on the way back! Like other walkers, we rediscovered this area that we thought we knew inside out from driving through it. No problems following the path, although we did hesitate a little when entering the woods after the Favreuse farm. Many thanks to the author!

I didn't expect to find such a pleasant place on the Saclay plateau, with woods and valleys. We shortened the walk to 2 hours by taking the "GRP Ceinture verte" at stage 7

A lovely walk through the woods and along fields (and streams!). A few difficulties finding the way at the end of sections (4) and (8). Traffic noise at times, but not too bad. We visited the Benedictine abbey church and its shop.

A pleasant and easy hike, even if there was a bit too much walking for our liking. It still felt like a holiday, though, with beautiful views and lovely buildings.

A very pleasant walk in the sunshine. We were already familiar with the section between points 5 and 6 (which we had jogged before!), but we enjoyed discovering the other parts. We live in Palaiseau, but weren't very familiar with the area around Vauhallan, which is well worth a visit! The distance and time were as expected (2½ hours)

This is a very pleasant hike, without any particular difficulty, through a landscape of cereal fields and woods, partly following the famous rigoles, shallow ditches that carried water for the Sun King's aquatic pleasures.
Quite a few people were out on this chilly Sunday in April, and the rumble of traffic on the main road between 8 and 9 o'clock were the only (minor) drawbacks to this route
On the other hand, I absolutely loved Limon Abbey, which is well worth a visit, as access to the church and shop is free.
All in all, a very well-balanced walk combining nature, history and religious art.

Walk taken during the week, no one around except on the section set aside for cyclists and joggers, which is also the least pleasant part of the route.
An interesting sight in the last third of the circuit is the organic farmhouse, which is reminiscent of Louisiana.

Thanks, Netra; I've been checking out your rides in the Antony-Orsay area for a while now... Always perfect for me!
This one is also very good; only the central part is a little less nice: I did it at a "sporty" pace.

A beautiful hike, especially when the sun is shining, as there are many areas without trees. A lovely route along the stream.
Negative point: there are no distance markers between the different points. A small indication of the length of the routes between the different points would be a plus!
Shorter than advertised. 2 hours 5 minutes. Busy on Sundays with walkers and cyclists.
But well done anyway!
