Circular route around Barnas - La Farre

After a glimpse of the upper Ardèche valley, this hike enters one of the many small valleys of the complex terrain of the Ardèche Cévennes. Take care on the RN102 (be careful when walking alongside it and crossing it).

Description of the walk

See Practical Information for the starting point.

(S/E) Head down the small road below. Follow it to the right, then turn left at the crossroads to cross first a recent footbridge, then the old Bouix bridge. Continue to the right after the bridge towards Champ Hagot.

(1) Keep to the right after the hamlet, follow the path which crosses a stream and then returns to run alongside the Ardèche further up. Continue to the Pont du Sigadou.

(2) Cross the Pont du Sigadou. Walk carefully along the right-hand side of the RN102 for 200m.

(3) Cross over to reach the first car park on the left. Enter the village via the street away from the main road. Climb the steps at the “Sentier botanique” sign. Follow this nature trail, which climbs gradually to the east of the village, then turns north. Join the tarmac road at the hamlet of Le Pouget.

(4) Continue north along this small road. Pass the next hamlet (Les Granges).

(5) Leave the road 150m further on, before the descent to the stream, and take a path that climbs to the left. Keep heading north. At the tarmac road, descend to the right to the bridge over the La Farre stream.

(6) Follow the road down to Le Bouix, bypassing the hamlet of Les Ayvidés on the right

(7) Turn left onto the RN102. Cross over to reach the car park (S/E).

Notes

Starting point:
- Coming from Thueyts via the A102, heading towards Barnas, after Chaudons, at the place known as "Le Pont du Saut", look for a widening on the left, just after the bridge. Due to the solid line, turn round at Barnas using the car park on the right-hand side of the road.
- Coming from Barnas, after the hamlet of Le Bouix, park on the right at this widening just after the sign for the place known as "Le Pont du Saut".

Good walking boots are recommended.

Worth a visit

Paths, landscapes, woodland and typical Ardèche hamlets.
Streams and bridges in the Ardèche mountains.
Beautiful views over this section of the Ardèche valley.
In the hamlet of Les Ayvidés, a beautiful carved gateway (it is possible to walk around the hamlet at the bottom).

I had to cut this walk short because the path leading to the botanical garden hadn’t been cleared of undergrowth by the end of June 2024.

A lovely walk which, although easy, offers the chance to take in the beautiful landscapes of the Ardèche.

Thank you, Mucou, for your encouraging comment. Few people venture into the upper Ardèche Valley, even though it’s just as beautiful.

A lovely walk through the woods for the first part.

The tarmac section on the way back was a welcome relief given the storms the day before.
