Description of the walk

Park in the car park along the Semois at the foot of the Saint-Lambert bridge in Vresse-sur-Semois.

(S/E) Head east, cross the stream over the old bridge and follow the Semois river along a wide path. Further on, leave the path and take a narrow path on the right. After a few buildings on the left, you will arrive at a platform, the starting point of the wicker bridge.

(1) Cross the Semois river via the footbridge, taking care. At the exit, turn right and enter the village of Laforêt. Walk up to the Pépé Crohet fountain.

(2) Turn right onto the Sentier des Légendes (Legends Trail). At the next crossroads, leave the wide path and climb up the trail, which is marked with plaques bearing proverbs. At the top, the trail continues to the left. Follow it to reach the viewpoint over Laforêt.

(3) Descend (west) to rejoin the tarmac road.
Turn right, ignore the paths on the right, and walk past the houses. The path becomes a trail and enters the woods. After about 50 metres, it leads to a major crossroads. Ignore the path on the right and take the path next to it, which climbs up to the Saloru viewpoint. Continue north-west to the viewpoint.

(4) Descend to the left via a steep, winding path. You will reach the road. Turn right. Cross the bridge over the Semois and you will soon reach a crossroads.

(5) Turn left, then left again onto Chemin Romaine.

*****Or, on the right-hand pavement of the bridge at the end of the railing, use the pedestrian ramp. Pass under the bridge on the right and
-Reach Rue d'en Bas along the Semois. Follow it in the direction of the current. Pass under the old railway bridge. At the end of the campsite, turn right then left onto the asphalt. Continue north, entering the woods along the river. Reach a large bend.

(6) Continue east. Ignore the flat path on the left and take the path that climbs steeply. Further on, ignore the path on the right that joins the N 935. The uphill path leads back to the aforementioned road. Follow it to the left until you reach the Jambon de Membre viewpoint on the left.

(7) Return to the road and cross it uphill. A few metres further on, take the path on the right between the road and the plantations. Cross the field (keeping to the edges) via a 90° turn on the right to join a path on the left. This leads to a small road.
To avoid crossing the field (which is prohibited in Belgium!!!), go down the road for 50 metres, go up to the left and then left again to join the path between the fields mentioned above.

(8). Turn right onto this path. Ignore the two paths on the right and left. You will arrive at a well-equipped picnic area for hikers.

(9) Take a path on the left towards the woods, follow it for a few metres, and before the meadow, turn left under the fir trees, heading north-east for less than 100 metres to join theGR®. Follow it to the right and then to the left. At the end of this straight line, it continues to the left.

(10) Take a faint, sometimes obstructed path on the right, which widens as it goes, still heading south. After the dip in a small valley, a sign indicating "Le Maquis" points the way to the left. Reach Le Maquis.

(11) Make a small detour to the right to reach Camp des Blaireaux. Then continue downhill to the ford of the Blancs Cailloux stream.

(12) Do not cross the stream. With vegetation taking over and a lack of maintenance, it is not easy to find the right direction. Climb up opposite towards the rocky peak to find the trail again. At the crossroads, ignore the path on the left and take the one on the right, the Promenade des Fées (sign embedded in a tree above), for a steep climb that leads to a plateau. After a short descent, you will come to a junction of two paths.

(13) Take the path on the right, which climbs after a dip. At the top, the view opens up onto Vresse and the wooden bridge. Take the steep path to reach the road along a fenced property. Descend to the right, and at the church, take the street on the left to reach the car park (S/E). (4)

We did this magnificent hike to the wooden bridge in Laforêt again. Last year, we came in May, but the bridge hadn't been installed yet. Unfortunately, this year again, the bridge has not been installed due to heavy rains that have raised the level of the Semois River, making it impossible to install the footbridge. Apparently, we will have to come back once again to see this attraction in the centre of Vresse-sur-Semois.

After the incessant rain, some of the forest paths remain very muddy. There is a bench at point 4, at the viewpoint. The path after point 9 no longer exists, so we had to cross a field. It is clear that some of the paths have recently been transformed into streams and are barely passable.

Despite these inconveniences, the hike is still superb and we were able to enjoy the magnificent landscapes of the region. The charm of the Semois and the beauty of the surrounding nature are well worth a few difficulties. We hope that next time, the wooden bridge will be in place and the paths will be more passable, so that we can fully enjoy this beautiful walk.

A beautiful and picturesque walk. The wooden bridge at point 1 had not yet been installed at the time (end of May), as indicated by the warning sign at the start of the trail. However, this section is still interesting as it features information boards explaining the geological history of the region. You can still follow the route by crossing the bridge at the starting point and walking along the other bank of the Semois until you reach the main route. The walk is classified as difficult. It is true that the ascents and descents are long and demanding, but I think the level of difficulty can be considered moderate. Sometimes there are inaccuracies in the description. It is impossible to follow the route after point 9, so you have to find other solutions. We took the parallel road. Children will love the Sentier des Légendes (Legends Trail), where they can meet characters from fairy tales.

A very beautiful hike.
Of course, the first section up to the bridge is quite busy, but after that there aren't many people around (but it was raining).

As for the description: no problems, except at point 12, where it's difficult to spot the small path. Here's my version:
"When you reach the river at the ford, take a path that branches off to the right, and after a few metres (3 or 5, no more), there is a barely visible trail (as if it were a diversion from the swollen river): take it to the left and you will quickly start climbing. The trail becomes well marked.

In autumn, the woods must be beautiful.

Hello,

The hike itself is really good, but the explanations are vague and lack detail.

Cross the small stone bridge

Point 2: it should be made clear that you have to cross the entire village and go to the second fountain (circular with a kind of wash house in front). There are two viewpoints over LAFORET to see at this point (a small one and a large one with a kind of dragon sculpture a little further along the route).

Point 3: take the tarmac road to the right, passing in front of a few houses; the road gradually becomes a path and ends up climbing a fairly steep slope in the woods (not 50 metres as indicated but a few hundred metres). At the end of the climb, you will come to a crossroads with six different paths. Do not take the first one on the right, but the second one on the right, which climbs up towards the Belvédère du Soloru.

Point 6: cross the entire campsite (quite long), pass the bend (concrete road at the very end of the campsite) and take a path through the woods on the left.
To reach the Jambon de Membre viewpoint, you can either go through the woods or take the road, which you can return to via the woods by continuing along the route. The Jambon viewpoint is indicated on a blue sign on the road, where it is clearly marked (Point de vue du Jambon).

Point 8: Head towards Orchimont and take the road towards the Maquis campsite, which is located near Orchimont. You are on a road and at some point you will see a wooden picnic area that looks almost like a small house when you are in the distance.

Point 9: When you reach a farm, take the path on the left for a few hundred metres until you reach the pine forest.

Point 10: You will come to a path that is overgrown with brambles, nettles, etc. (at least, it was when I took it). Follow it to the bottom, where you will come to a junction with another path that goes either to the right or to the left. Turn right and stay on this path (signposted on the trees with a blue, white and blue GR sign) or blue.

At the end of this path, you will come to another path with a sign that says "le maquis". Turn left.

Point 11: continue downhill (at one point, you will come to a junction with paths going off to the right and left; continue on the left).

Point 12: you will arrive at the bottom of the stream. Follow it for a few metres and at some point you will see a small path that climbs steeply to your right with a sign on a tree that says "promenade des fées" (fairy walk).

Point 13: after climbing 600 to 800 metres, you will reach the top and on your left you will see a sign saying Vresse-sur-Semois 15 min => follow the path to the end.

PS: the Pont de Claies (wooden footbridge) is only open from the end of May to September.

Please note that the bridge mentioned in point 1 is only available in spring and summer; it is dismantled from late September to March.
We were therefore unable to complete the walk, but there are many other routes that are feasible and signposted.

Well done, very accurate description, map + description, you can practically do without a GPS. At point 12, we just couldn't see the path leading up to the rocky peak. After the instruction "do not cross the ford", perhaps specify: look for and find (!) the path that goes up to the rocky peak. It is just opposite the short path that would take you back up to the road.
Note at point 9: hesitant to cross the meadow, we continued along the road, then took the first path on the left, following the trail in parallel. A little further on, this path is also obstructed by two gateways, the last one before entering the woods.

Otherwise, the first part is really great. It's a shame that the section of road before the Jambon de Membre viewpoint is so long (please specify this). The second part after this viewpoint is a little less picturesque with some slightly more cluttered passages. (Also, after this viewpoint, choose between crossing the meadow or going back a little; the option is a little confusing).

But a really nice effort in terms of precision.

I completed the circular at the start of Vresse-sur-Semois. In general, we understood the description of the hike well. There was just one issue: at the end of number 7, it would have been helpful to mention that we were arriving at a tarmac road, because the picnic area indicated at number 8 was far away and invisible. As the explanation was unclear, we asked a local resident for directions. Positive points: a very beautiful, varied and "magical" hike. Beautiful views. The paths were well maintained and we didn't see anyone else on them. Highly recommended.

That's right. At point 12, it's difficult to find your way because the vegetation changes over time and there's a lack of maintenance
. The only solution is to climb up to the rocky peak, where you will find the "Promenade des Fées" trail.

A beautiful, varied and interesting hike with stunning views in a magnificent region.
Minor drawbacks:
- the section leaving Membre-sur-Semois runs alongside a rather chaotic collection of chalets, caravans, etc. along the Semois river for quite a long time
- the description of the second part of the route is not precise enough (we hiked based solely on the IGN extract and written directions); in some places, there are no markings or landmarks to help you find the right direction; this is particularly the case at point (12)

.

Hello,

After leaving a comment on the Claies Bridge, I just had to do your hike.

Needing to cover some distance for a project in its final stages, my husband and I set off on your trail.
I know most of the places you mention from my own hikes, but separately, so I was interested in doing them all at once.
In the end... superb weather for walking, discovering the trail of legends, always beautiful views to see again... for our taste, a little too many tarmac roads and utility paths rather than bucolic trails to connect the places, but you can't always do otherwise, that's for sure.
So... the following is only intended to help you correct certain parts of the hike. Please see it as nothing more than mutual assistance.

Best regards
Carla

To correct:

- the WPT (3) does not correspond to your description. We are only at the turn after the path ... marked with plaques with proverbs.
The first viewpoint is on Vresse sur Semois, the one in Laforêt is further away. To help you, if you wish, take a look at my route via my username (it's the hike on 04/08 at 10:15 a.m.), I've put them in Waypoint: (1) is Vresse and (2) is Laforêt. You only need to set your WPT at the Laforêt viewpoint (3) and then descend to rejoin the tarmac road.

- At (12), there is no mention of La Perche (a place located well after (13)) or the fairy hole. There is just a sign mentioning the "fairy walk" embedded in a tree high up. Perhaps we can find it by the roadside, but we are far from it when the two paths separate and we have to climb to the right ... for a steep climb that leads to a plateau.

For information:

- (5): At the end of the bridge over the Semois in Membre (immediately to the right at the end of the railing, on the right-hand pavement), there is a pedestrian ramp that allows you to go down directly along the Semois. At the bottom, simply turn right, go under the bridge and follow the trail in the "rue d'en bas" (lower street). It is not shown on the IGN map or on OSM, but it does exist.

What also caught my attention were the two instances where you ask us to "cross everything". In Belgium, this is prohibited: Walloon decree, section "off public roads". After the (7), I don't think the owner would be happy to see the alfalfa he sowed trampled on (our case at the beginning of August). As for the (9), where we have to climb over a fence (80 cm) to get under the fir trees... go ahead and say you didn't see it.
There are two simple alternatives to avoid entering the aforementioned private properties. 1/ Retrace your steps slightly to the Point de vue du Jambon and take the path that joins the Flachis chapel walk (you pass the sign as you go up the road) and 2/ take the path just before (9) and then turn right at the first trail (GR).

I informed Visorando, when sending another message about the same route, but shorter, to check with the Vresse tourist office about the bridge being built, which takes place between mid-June and mid-September. And also an error on my part on the route at point 2.

Hello,
This message is just to let you know that the wooden bridge has not yet been installed (it is dismantled every year; it is not a permanent bridge). It will be installed during June if the water level of the Semois river allows it (response received from the Vresse Tourist Office on 17/04/19). It would be prudent to note this in the practical information and provide an alternative. Kind regards.
