Notes

This route is ideal for cycling, as at least 70% of it is on tarmac.

Worth a visit

(5) The Aire Canal: Initially known as the Scarpe and the Escaut, it has been widened and classified as a deep-draught waterway from Douai to Dunkirk; it is called the Aire Canal from La Bassée to Air-sur-la-Lys, then becomes the Neufossé Canal as far as Saint-Omer, and finally the Dunkirk Canal where it flows into the North Sea.

(14) The Lys: From Air-sur-la-Lys, it flows through Merville and Armentières before joining the Deule at Deulémont, which is channelled as far as Ghent.
It is used for recreational boating and is sometimes prone to severe flooding, causing it to burst its banks, particularly at Sailly-sur-la-Lys.

The route was a bit of a let-down – too much tarmac and not enough countryside.
It has no viewpoints or points of interest.

Hello, we went for a walk on 2 May. A lovely walk in the Lys region; the directions for Haute-Rue and Rue Haute, Basse-Rue and Rue Basse were a bit vague, but we managed to find our way back. Happy walking to all, René and Patrick
