A unique and spectacular megalithic trail starting from Cantallops

A magnificent and unique route. Countless dolmens and menhirs. A stunning landscape of granite boulders, reminiscent of the Sidobre site in the Tarn, though with very different vegetation.
All this with the option of a break in the village of Capmany.
No particular difficulty apart from the length: the paths are flat and often wide, yet charming nonetheless. You need to pay attention to the route to avoid missing any megaliths. (Some of the blue markings are misleading).
The Jonquère area isn’t just home to hideous supermarkets: it boasts beautiful natural scenery.
I’ve tried to mark all the dolmens on the map, but there are so many that I’m bound to have missed some: please do help with the survey – thank you.

Description of the walk

By car from La Jonquere, take the road to the village of Cantallops. After about 1 km of winding uphill road, there is a short straight stretch. There, take the small track on the right signposted towards the ponds. Park just before the small dry pond.

(S/E) Carry on until you reach Prat Llong de Baix.

(1) Turn right and pass the Mas des Estanys. Carry on, then turn left to find the Estanys l Dolmen.

(2) Carry on to the Estanys II Dolmen.

(3) Head due south to reach the Reconte Menhir dels Estanys I.

(4) Turn left to discover the Menhir dels Estanys II.

(5) Stay on the path, cross the wide track and reach the Menhir Quer Afumat I.

(6) Be careful here not to take the main track to the left, but carry on along the narrow track to the right. Cross the wide track again. At the next junction, turn left and you’ll soon come to another Y-shaped junction.

(7) Keep to the right here and at the following junctions until you reach Barraca de la Losa and the Dolmen del Mirgoler.

(8) Return to the road and follow it, keeping to the blue markings, until you reach a hairpin bend at the Dolmen de la Barraca del Lladre.

(9) Turn left and walk on to discover the Dolmen de la Jaça d’en Torrent.

(10) Continue south-east, stopping briefly at Pedra dreta Comanera ll.

(11) Carry on to find, one after the other, Pedra dreta Comanera l.

(12) A few steps further on is the Menhir Vidal.

(13) Carry on along this picturesque route to admire the Pedra del Sacrifici.

(14) Carry on along the winding path to reach the Énorme Dolmen.

(15) Continue down a very gentle slope to enter the charming village of Capmany. Walk through the village to visit the Church of Santa-Agata.

(16) Cross back in the opposite direction and begin an easy climb up to the Pierre Oscillante.

(17) Continue due north until you reach a Y-junction.

(18) Take the track on the left and head for the Dolmen del Quer Afumat.

(19) Carry on along this track, go round the Mas del Quer Afumat and return to the Menhir Quer Afumat junction you passed on the way out.

(6) Turn right at almost a 90° angle and, a few steps further on, you’ll come to the Pedra de Terma i Barraca.

(20) Head north-east to the Cromlec del Mas Baleta.

(21) Then continue on to the Mas Baleta II Dolmen.

(22) Turn right to reach the Mas Baleta I Dolmen.

(23) Continue on to the Puig de la Llosa road, turn left onto it and return to the original junction at the Prat Llong de Baix pond.

(1) Turn right and follow the route back in the opposite direction to return to the car park by the small pond (S/E).

Notes

It’s a real maze: make sure you follow the path carefully or you’ll miss many dolmens and other features.
No water: except in the village of Capmany (about 10 km from the start), where you can have a drink at the bar or a meal at the restaurant.
Avoid in summer when it’s very hot.
The tracks are very easy to follow.

Worth a visit

Requesens Castle is a few kilometres past Cantallops.

A long walk, but without any particular difficulties. A GPS track is essential given the numerous paths.

A magnificent hike that felt like being in Tuscany. Long but easy as there is little elevation gain. GPS tracks are essential.
Dolmens, menhirs, marvellous rocks...
