Description of the walk

There are no dedicated parking spaces, but you can park in the street near No. 44 without disturbing the residents.

(S/E) At No. 44 on your left, go up the road. Pass the last houses in the hamlet and continue along the road for 1.4 km until you reach a large farm.

GR® 16 signposting

(1) Turn left onto the grassy path, along the hedge of the property opposite the large farm. Descend towards the Semois. Continue to the left before the chalet gate.

(2) Climb up and discover thefirst viewpoint over the Semois. Follow the path and discover thesecond viewpoint a little further on. Continue along the contour line. Descend steeply and come out onto a wide forest path near a stream.

(3) Turn right, cross the stream and, further on, cross another stream. At the intersection with another path, continue on the right along the Semois to the next intersection; there is a bench on your right.

From here, if there is flooding or heavy rainfall, the rest of the trail may become impassable (see practical information).

(4) Stay along the Semois. A stream joins the path. Continue for about 1 km. Pass a dead tree still standing on your left, and a little further on, look for another path on the left.

(5) Climb up the hollow path on the left, which leads to a wider path that you follow uphill. The path becomes more passable and passes into open country. After a hairpin bend on your right and at the concrete water channel on the ground, you will see a path on your left.

(6) Take this path and walk back and forth to discover the Dolmen d'Azy. Return to the path and continue uphill to the crossroads.

(7) Turn right and, at a place called La Bohahan, turn right to see the viewpoint 50 metres away. Retrace your steps and continue to the right. Leave the woods. The dirt track becomes a road at the first property. At the junction with another road, turn left and return to your parking spot on Rue Azy (A/D).

Dolmen: The Azy dolmen is a north-south facing, diamond-shaped table measuring 3 m by 1 m and 60 cm thick, placed on a metre-high granite block and the outcropping rock. Human intervention in this construction is certain, but the period remains undetermined.

An absolutely superb route, perfectly described, and apparently not very busy. Some sections along the Semois between points 3 and 4 were a bit of a challenge, but that added a bit of excitement to the walk. A very beautiful viewpoint (Bohanan). Another interesting point (not mentioned in the description): the Gréa redoubt (just before this viewpoint), the remains of a fortification from the Vauban era.

A magnificent hike with superb views of the Semois. Very shady, so ideal in the height of summer when it's hot ;-)
We did it during the week in mid-May. We hardly saw anyone else.
An easy and pleasant route with a few gentle slopes.
Best done in dry weather... As the Semois is quite low (unfortunately, in May 2025), there are no difficulties along the river. In rainy weather or when the river is high, it is certainly more complicated...
Furthermore, this hike is probably quite busy in the summer season as it is a tourist region (GR16).

A truly beautiful walk through the woods and along the banks of the Semois. A slightly wild setting that makes you feel like you're alone at the end of the world. Some beautiful views of the river, especially the last one. Magnificent. And that dolmen in the middle of the woods. Amazing. Apart from a few small climbs, the route is easy and pleasant. Small restaurant in Florenville. Perfect!

Hello
Thanks to CARLA for yesterday's route, which was a bit slippery in places (it had rained during the night). At one point, the ground was eroded along the Semois river and then there was a tree lying across the path (which we had to go around from above). We didn't meet anyone, and the scenery was a bit wild e loved it, and we ate at waypoint 4.

Good evening, daniel54bkt,

I thought it would be easy to find since it's the only one there...
I can only assume that you didn't have the app...
I must admit that I'm a little confused by your explanation.
Did you turn left BEFORE the chalet?
Then you just need to follow the path... it doesn't run close to the Semois but veers off a little and climbs up the escarpments...
I'm perplexed and don't see what else I could have added...

Glad to read that you still enjoyed the walk
Best regards

Back at the Semois, we looked for the path that would take us back up to viewpoints 2 and 3. Unable to find it, we had to climb back up through the vegetation.
Apart from this minor detail, it was a pleasant walk along the Semois.

My wife and I have just completed this short walk and we are delighted with the views, the landscapes and the Azy dolmen, which, despite being from the region, we did not know about. It was a real discovery.

One small comment, however: in the description of the route at (1) GR16 signposting, you say "Descend towards the LESSE", but I assume you mean "Descend towards the SEMOIS".
André and Michèle.
