Traversée du Buet

Crossing the Buet, ascending via the Refuge de Grenairon and descending via Les Fonts. It is a long loop with a significant elevation gain and a section at an altitude of 3,000 metres. Having done this hike again in the direction of Grenairon chalet to Fonts chalets, I am repeating the description as it is much easier, shorter (approx. 9 to 10 hours), and it is easier to see the rest of the path from above when descending from Beaux Prés.

Description of the walk

Start at the end of the road in Salvagny (Sixt - Maison Neuve - Salvagny).

(S/E) Do not cross the bridge, but climb to the left (sign indicating Chalet de Grenairon).
The path, which is a little steep at first, climbs in regular switchbacks. After crossing the slabs, the slope becomes less steep. You will arrive at Chalet de Grenairon. Allow about two hours from the start.

(1) The rest of the route is marked with red dots. Climb up to the ridge above the refuge and follow the ridge for a while. Follow the contour line across a wide traverse to reach Lac du Plan du Buet.

(2) Continue climbing a little further, following the cairns (follow the HT line) towards Cheval Blanc.

(3) Turn right (sign) to reach the Buet ridge via a clearly visible trail. It is relatively easy (if dry), with regular switchbacks that become a little more direct towards the end.

(4) You reach a well-rounded ridge (with breathtaking views of the Argentière glacier) which quickly leads you to the steepest part of the ridge, equipped with a cable from bottom to top. It's easy (well, if it's dry and you're careful). Then, we climb a little further along the ridge and reach the summit of Mont Buet. This is where the crowds are!

(5) Still following the ridge, descend (relay antenna on the left). We pass in front of the Abri Pictet. We begin to see blue dots that will guide us from here on.
Leave the path that climbs up from the Refuge de la Pierre-à-Bérard and head right, still on the ridge (mark the Fonts in blue on a rock). At first, the path is easy. Then descend slightly to the left of the ridge and take care on a few sections: this is a challenging, schistose part with a drop below, and a slip could have serious consequences.
You will arrive at the chain passage (now a cable), which may be daunting for those who are not used to this type of passage (a rope may be reassuring). This is the last difficulty (for now).

(6) We change slopes (passing to the west of the ridge) and descend the slope below the ridge, following the cairns and blue dots.
Soon, you will find the grass that disappeared shortly after Grenairon and you will enter the Fonts cirque. The path, which is clearly visible at the beginning, more or less disappears at the edge of a large ravine that you have to cross (keep a close eye on the trail and the blue markings). After that, the path is always clearly marked, even if it is sometimes hidden in the tall grass. The lower part of Les Beaux Prés requires renewed attention as the terrain is quite slippery (wet, schistose and muddy) and there are a few crossings with quite a drop beneath your feet. You can only relax once you reach the stream.

(7) At the stream, you will reach a wide track at a place called Les Mitaines. All that remains is to walk gently down this track, which passes in front of the Fonts chalets (you can always stop for a drink at the refuge)

(8) Continue along this track, which eventually takes you back to the bridge at Salvagny (S/E).

Practical information

It's a long day's walk. You need to be in good physical condition to make sufficient progress if you want to complete this circuit in a day.
The weather must be perfectly clear, as even GPS navigation would be very difficult and dangerous without visibility, not to mention the inconvenience of rain on the schist.
There is no water at the summit. However, water is abundant elsewhere, so you need to manage your supplies carefully.
The vertiginous sections are not technically difficult but require vigilance and a certain amount of experience with this type of terrain. This is the boundary between hiking and easy mountain running. There are sections where falling is not an option.

We made the crossing from south to north (starting from the Fonts refuge and finishing in Salvagny via the Grenairon refuge). We were hesitant to set off given the warning about the difficulty of finding the route on the climb up from Les Fonts, but it went very well.

In this direction, the trail is well marked, except between 7 and 6:

  • when crossing the large ravine (where every rainfall erases the trail... but you can see it on the other side to give you a reference point),
  • then after this ravine, at the start of the climb to point 6, on a steep, very clayey, gullied slope that is extremely slippery when wet. We reassured ourselves with a GPS check. You have to climb up a small, poorly marked ravine, then exit on the left when you reach a small rocky/grassy ridge.

It's a magnificent route, but serious: long (it took us 10 hours from the Fonts refuge, with a break of over an hour at the summit, but we ran the whole way. You have to cope with the effects of altitude and then the 2,300 m descent to Salvagny...) and technical (the cables are there for a reason, and you need to be sure-footed on the slippery slopes and in the large ravine). It's definitely best not to be there in rainy or foggy weather.

I recommend this magnificent crossing in the direction of Les Fonts towards Grenairon, as there are some very slippery sections between 6 and 7, which I would not have liked to encounter on the descent... And you can enjoy the beauty of the Cirque des Fonts in the morning without the crowds on the other side.

very beautiful, spectacular landscapes, but you need to be in very good physical condition given the significant elevation gain!
Technical aerial passages... the cable is really useful. Avoid in wet weather!
The descent is truly endless... we arrived on our knees! This somewhat detracts from the appeal of the route... except for trained athletes who don't have time to admire the scenery...

a beautiful parish. A few aerial passages, but nothing insurmountable, even with my fear of heights.
The descent seemed endless, but the scenery was incredible. We came across a chamois. The Plan du Buet lake was almost dry.

A very beautiful hike, much less crowded than the ascent via Vallorcine (you can see this at the summit).
We still caught up with a few groups that had left the refuge in the last section, but there were few people before that (a few "slowdowns" on the cables).
There is a short section of descent shared with other hikers, but almost no one is there once you turn right towards the bottom. The junction is not very obvious, especially with the recent snowfall, but this is the only minor orientation difficulty.
The blue markers are then very helpful. The exposed section is not obvious but not particularly difficult either, although it is not recommended in bad weather. We meet a few people after a long solitary descent to the Fond refuge.

Good description of the route and very pleasant trail, slightly (but less than I thought) off the beaten track from Vallorcine.
However, although the first part is relatively easy to follow (in good weather) and fairly well-trodden, the descent after Le Buet requires caution (the trail is sometimes less obvious, with exposed sections and less frequented paths).

I started from the Fardelays car park + bonus at Cheval Blanc (from Lac du Plan du Buet) + route error after Buet. Total distance approximately 28 km and 2600 m elevation gain.
Couldn't find the little shortcut that appears on the IGN map at the Pelly de Serai footbridge (10-15 minutes after the car park) but doesn't seem to exist in reality.
The climb to Grenairon is fairly steady and shaded. The rest of the route above the refuge is rocky, well marked with red dots and cairns. A few steps require caution at the Cathédrale, but otherwise there are no major difficulties until you reach Lac du Plan (I can confirm that in poor visibility, the section on the sharp limestone pavement before the lake can be confusing).
The climb to Cheval Blanc should also be tackled with caution in poor visibility (the path is sometimes difficult to distinguish from the rest of the terrain and the cairns are not always clearly visible), but it is easy to do.
The Cheval Blanc -> Buet traverse is similar (aim for the electricity pylon at Col de Génévrier, which will help you find the first cairns). Pass below the Pointe, on the eastern slope. The traverse joining the trail up to Buet (Crête des Eves) is not necessarily obvious (sloping, potentially slippery in wet weather).
The climb up the Buet ridge with the cables should be taken seriously (depending on the hikers' level, weather conditions, etc.).
On the descent from Buet, DO NOT MISS the path that leads to Grenier de Willy, leaving the antenna on your left. The blue markers are clearly visible, but my eagerness to start the descent made me miss the path and then it was impossible to cut across, so I had to climb back up.
The rest of the descent is well explained in the description but requires good weather and vigilance (a few steps on a steep slope of rotten schist).
The descent below Les Beaux Prés to point 7 is long and tedious (narrow path hidden in the vegetation, risk of twisting your ankle due to fatigue).
The end from the Fonds refuge (this little-known spot is really worth a visit, the Fonds cirque is breathtaking and truly beautiful) is no problem, with a wide path until you reach the fork to the Fardelays car park.

A magnificent climb that isn't difficult if you don't suffer from vertigo and use the cables to help you.
However, there is a very small section of the descent that is unprotected and very steep on schist, where a cable would be welcome: this should only be attempted by people who are very sure-footed and in dry, clear weather.
But it's a magnificent hike, to be done again and again!

Impeccable climb, not very difficult except for the final ascent with cables; a harness is not necessary.
Please note that there is no water available during the climb in August (except at the refuge with the bar).
Superb panorama from the summit, lots of people arriving from Vallorcine it seems.
The descent is much more difficult after point 6 on the map. Even when viewed from above, the path is not easy to follow and is very steep. It is very hard on the knees and is not a well-travelled path.

Hello, a magnificent hike completed in 2014, with a detour imposed due to impenetrable fog on the Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval side once we reached the summit of Buet. Prudence dictated that I descend on the Pierre à Bérard side (which was completely clear), which led to quite an adventure hitchhiking to find my car, which I had left behind... In Salvagny (travel broadens the mind, as they say). This is one of the possible escape routes in such a situation, as the descent via Les Beaux Prés is technically challenging and dangerous in bad weather and/or poor visibility. I completed the entire route two years later in good weather, which was a real treat .

SUPERB hike but very difficult as advertised: be careful not to do it if there is snow or if it is too wet. Splendid 360° view and view of the Mont Blanc Massif. For older people (it was my second Buet 41 years later), the descent is very long and steep for the thigh muscles. We camped at Lac du Plan du Buet: a restful and cool night...

Good description of the route.
I think the climb via Grenairon is a wise choice for this route. Not only is the climb more pleasant, but it's also easier to find the route in the beautiful meadow area. We found the start of the descent quite easily; diogene412's explanations are very clear.
The descent requires attention. Some sections are exposed but never dangerous. The blue markings are dense where needed, but I think this area should still be avoided in foggy weather.
It's a long descent, a bit physically demanding, to the Chalets des Fonts.
We set off from Les Fardelay. Our GPS showed 23.7 km (Oruxmaps app on Sony M5), barometric altimeter 2300 m of elevation gain.
A magnificent day's hiking, best suited to a group of experienced hikers.

Thank you, diogene412

The description is excellent.
I can confirm that it is more pleasant/easier to climb via the Grenairon refuge. (The wardens, Cécile and Patrice, are great.) It is also better to climb the Buet ridge than to descend it.
Spending a night at the refuge allows you to gain a little altitude for the next day. I would like to point out that at the summit, the blue mark indicating the descent to Les Fonts is not easy to find if you have descended a little too far.
For my part, I don't start from Salvagny, but from the car park on the road (which is passable by car) that leads to the Chalets des Fonts. This makes the return journey about a kilometreshorter https://www.visorando.com/images/smileys/...

In order to reduce the elevation gain, I slept in Grenairon. The climb to the summit takes 4½ hours, including breaks. After a snack, I begin the descent towards Les Fonts. One very slippery section could do with being secured with cables. I am delighted to arrive at the Les Fonts refuge with my head full of wonderful memories.

Thank you for the superb description, it has everything, even the crowds at the summit.
