Tour of Wissgrut Tremonkopf on snowshoes

A superb snowshoe hike starting from the Col de la Gentiane, near Ballon d'Alsace, 30 km north of Belfort.
This hike will allow you to discover the snow-capped peaks of the Southern Vosges and, if you are lucky enough to have clear weather, you can admire the Swiss Alps and even Mont Blanc.

Description of the walk

Park in the large Gentiane car park, just before the Ballon d'Alsace ski lifts.
The route is marked with a snowshoe and numbered 5. However, it is advisable to follow the GPS track as the markings are often missing.

(S/E) At the end of the car park, turn right onto the path. This is the ideal place to put on your snowshoes.
Continue along the path, enter the forest and pass a chalet after a left-hand bend.

(1) Just after the chalet, at the fork, follow the path on the right which descends slightly. Leave the paths on the right until you reach the crossroads near the Wissgrutt stubble fields.

(2) Follow the path on the right, which continues to descend slightly. It runs alongside the stubble fields located a little higher up on the left. (Do not take the path on the left, which corresponds to snowshoe hike 4: "Petit Tour du Wissgrut" (2.5 km). Arrive at the crossroads with theGR®5marked with a red rectangle.

(3) This is the Gros Hêtre crossroads. Turn left, then left again a few dozen metres further on. The path climbs again and leads to the alpine meadow. Head towards the summit.

(4) At the end of the mountain pasture, on the east side, is the summit of Tremontkopf at an altitude of 1,091 m. Turn left towards the Wissgrut farmhouse inn.
There are many snowshoe tracks, but the farm is easy to see.

(5) From the farm, climb up to the Vierge du Wissgrut and admire the superb landscape. Then continue downhill, passing by the stele erected in honour of an American aviator who fell at this spot. Head towards the edge of the forest.

(6) At the edge of the forest, continue across the meadow and descend along the forest on theGR®5.
Pass to the left of the La Gentiane ski lift and enter the forest slightly, continuing along the edge. Arrive at the starting point at the foot of the resort (S/E).

No particular difficulties on this route. Only one or two sections where the climb is a little steeper, but very short. Beautiful views.

Easy-to-follow and very pleasant route. Not too steep, which is an advantage when snowshoeing. Suitable for families with children. Beautiful forest section followed by stunning views of the ridges.

A superb snowshoe hike in beautiful winter sunshine. We followed it up with a return trip from Col du Ballon to Gentiane, making for a lovely 13 km snowshoe hike lasting around 4 hours (starting from the car park at the mine clearance monument).
