Tour of the Rocher du Quartier and the Pointe du Frou

A beautiful circular route at moderate altitude, not particularly physically demanding but with exposed sections that can be slippery. The route starts directly below the Rocher du Quartier, ascending via Tramoley and the Sapin de Saint-André to the Col de la Sarriette, crossing the Plateau de la Ruchère before descending via the postman’s path beneath the Pointe du Frou.

Description of the walk

There is parking available at the Carrefour Chemin du Crut for just 1 or 2 cars.

(S/E) Head south along the Chemin de la Colombaise road until the next Fork in the road, then take a track leading into the forest (towards Piquetière) to Tramoley.

(1) From there, turn left onto the path (signposted Pas de Pertuis “difficult passage”) which winds through the Rochers de Saint-André.

(2) Cross the difficult section using the cables without any real difficulty (a recently fallen tree stump protects the passage). The real difficulty lies further up, due to the steepness of the slope and the path, which can be slippery when wet.

(3) The path then runs along the cliff face of the Rocher de Saint-André before passing the Saint-André tree (44.5m) and reaching the Pas de Pertuis.

(4) Turn left and follow the road uphill to the first hairpin bend.

(5) Leave the road and follow the path on the left which leads to the Col de la Sarriette.

(6) Continue left, heading due north.

(7) Pass the path on your right leading to Les Riondettes and continue towards the viewpoint, which offers a fine view of La Grande Sure and the Saint-Laurent-du-Pont valley.

(8) Turn right towards Les Riondettes before turning left towards the “Nordic centre” at a place called Rocher du Quartier.

(9) Ignore the path leading to Le Cernay and continue along the Quartier cliff.

(10) Do not head up to the right towards the Nordic centre but join the tarmac road opposite. At the bend, take an unmarked path below the Chemin de la Pointe du Frou which descends straight towards Les Jolys.

(11) From there, head slightly uphill to the left between the houses until you reach the marked path coming from Pointe du Frou. The path is barely visible below the road but is well signposted.

(12) Head down to the right towards Les Reverdys and follow the road to the left for about a hundred metres.

(13) Take a good path below the "Le Parchey" lodge at the bend, which leads out above the church.

(14) Walk alongside the cemetery and turn onto the path above the road. The Chemin du Facteur begins in the forest and then crosses the Falaise du Frou via a comfortable ledge, offering a stunning view of the gorges.

(15) Cross a tricky, poorly protected section that has suffered rockfalls, wherecaution is advised, and continue along the path running parallel to the D520c.

(16) The path has been used for forestry work but is now looking good again, provided you follow it carefully as there are no signposts. The path runs discreetly above the forest track, which joins the road. The path overlooks the road below before reaching Le Châtelard. Follow the road for 50 m.

(17) Turn left onto Route des Boues, then take Route du Combet for 50 m.

(18) Head up the track opposite the Chemin des Blanches. The track climbs steeply as it approaches the cliff for 100 m.

(19) Follow the Sentier des Bœufs du bas to the right, which then has very little gradient, and join another path.

(20) At the crossroads, take the path on the right, which descends steeply and leads to Le Chargeoir.

(21) From the Chargeoir platform (table and benches), follow the tarmac road to the right to the Maison Guiguet farm, a recently restored house. Follow the path to the left above the house, which leads back to the car park (S/E).
