Access to the car park is from Lautenbachzell, following the tarmac road that climbs towards the Gustiberg holiday camp. The car park is at the end of the tarmac section.
(S/E) Take the small path that climbs quite steeply on the other side of the stream. Pass in front of a chalet and continue on the small path. Join a forest path.
(1) Turn right and follow it, ignoring the paths branching off to the right or left, until you reach the Klettenbach waterfalls.
(2) Take the opportunity to admire them (they may be dry in summer or autumn). Continue along the path until you reach another crossroads.
(3) Stay on the path going up to the left. You will reach the Gustiberg farmhouse inn.
(4) Enjoy the magnificent view of the Alsace plain and the Black Forest. Continue along the path until you reach the crossroads with the lake trail.
(5) Take the path that descends to the dam on the right.
(6) When you reach the Lac du Ballon dam, continue 30 metres along the bank to one of the most beautiful viewpoints over the lake and its crystal-clear waters. Retrace your steps and cross the dam, then take the stairs that lead to a path and then the forest track that starts the tour of the lake. Follow this path, walk around the lake, and rejoin the path that leads to the lake trail crossroads.
(5) Follow the same route back to the farmhouse inn.
(4) Turn left onto the path that descends towards the holiday camp. You will soon come to a fork in the path.
(7) Take the small path on the right (otherwise you will have to make a detour of a few metres) which descends and joins the forest path that takes you back to the starting point (S/E).
