Tour of Lake Gérardmer via the Tête and Mérelle Waterfall

This hike goes around Lake Gérardmer, the largest natural lake in the Vosges, via the Tête de Mérelle, which offers a magnificent view of the lake and the town of Gérardmer from its belvedere at the top of the tower, then past the small Mérelle Waterfall, hidden among moss-covered rocks.

Description of the walk

Departure from the car park located at the Henri Millan Stadium, 17 Chemin du Tour du Lac.

(S/E) Take Chemin des Rochottes, to the right of the stadium entrance, then take the second path on the right. Follow it to the hairpin bend in the forest road.

(1) Ignore this bend, as well as the track on the right, and continue on the path that starts to the left of the latter. Climb straight up and reach a forest track at the end of the forest road.

(2) Take it to the right and reach the Tête de Mérelle with its tower.

(3) Climb the 85 steps to enjoy the view and, after taking in the surroundings, return to the forest road.

(2) Follow it for about 150 metres and take the path down to the right. After going around the Haut Mérelle hill, making a wide curve to the left, you will reach the forest road again at a cross.

(4) Follow the road to the right, walk along the pond and then the bog on your left, and you will reach a multiple crossroads.

(5) Descend the path on the right, then keep right at the next fork. The path becomes steeper, over stones on the descent, and follows the stream to the waterfall.

(6) Continue downhill and, after crossing two footbridges, you will reach a road (D69).

(7) Cross it carefully, continue to the right on the access road to the restaurant and reach the shore of Lake Gérardmer.

(8) Continue to the left, along the edge of the lake. Out of season, walk between the lake and the restaurant; otherwise, walk around the back of the restaurant. Walk over the duckboards that protect the dyke from erosion and continue to follow the shore as closely as possible until you reach the road (D417).

(9) Continue along the footpath that runs alongside the road until you reach the Union Nautique building at 21 Route d'Épinal.

(10) Head down towards the lake and keep walking along it. Go past the harbour with its various water sports activities, then head to the car park at the Stade Henri Millan (S/E).

It's a shame that access to the tower is currently impossible due to forestry work. We had to turn back on the way because the path was closed. After a good climb, we could see the end, so it was disappointing.
