Tour du Carlit starting from Lac des Bouillouses

A beautiful, long and demanding day’s hike, set in the spectacular, listed landscape of Lac des Bouillouses and Puig Carlit. This hike is only suitable for hikers confident in their navigation skills, as part of the route is off-trail. Best undertaken in good weather, preferably in summer, setting off early. The path leading to Puig Carlit, which is very well marked and safe, features some slightly exposed sections that may pose difficulties for those prone to vertigo.

Description of the walk

(S/E) The first part of the walk follows the classic, well-marked route leading to Puig Carlit. From Lac des Bouillouses, near the Hôtel des Bones Hores, take the path heading due west, which climbs gently to a first fork between Estany Negre and Estany del Viver.

(1) Turn left (a more direct route; it is also possible to turn right) and continue due west. Carry on to Estany Sec, which you go round to the north before heading north-west to Estany de Vallell.

(2) Then head due west up a slope that is relatively gentle at first but becomes increasingly steep until you reach the small pass below Puig Carlit. Don’t hesitate to take a quick detour to the summit – the view is magnificent!

(3) Head due west down the very steep descent (scree), almost to the first small lake known as Estany dels Forats.

(4) Above the pond, leave the path and head due north to go round the rocky hillock to the east of Estany dels Forats. Then head north-east to pass beneath the hillock, where the slope is gentlest. The going is a bit difficult, but once you’ve gone round this hillock, you’ll soon reach a much more pleasant grassy stretch that’s not too steep (I came across some chamois when I did this walk).

(5) Head north-east then north to pass between two rocky massifs (Puig Castel Isard on the left and Ras del Carlit on the right). After this section, continue due north to join the clearly visibleGR® 10.

(6) Once you reach theGR®10, turn right and continue due east to quickly reach Portella de la Grava. TheGR®10descends gently south-east to Lac des Bouillouses.

(7) Keep to the right to walk along the lake heading south, and return to the starting point (S/E).

Hello Daniel, I’m glad you managed to complete this circular route, but I’m sorry about the route map – it is a bit rough, isn’t it? Actually, I first completed the route and then mapped out the route based on my memories; the most important thing was to pass between the first two hillocks and then head east of the Serra dels Forats de Lanos. The rest of the route, before joining the GR10, is done more or less ‘by sight’, with no real difficulties as far as I can recall.
The rest of the walk is a bit long; in any case, it makes for a lovely day’s walk!
Best regards,

An easy climb up to Carlit; the classic route is well-maintained
The descent is slippery, with no cairns; you can just about make out bits of the path.

The descriptions for the off-trail section didn’t allow me to navigate precisely.
I tried to stick to the track, but in this section the track has long straight sections that are impossible given the terrain; there must be a lot of missing waypoints. I chose the passageways somewhat by guesswork, which wasn’t always easy.

The circular pattern is lovely, but I don’t think I’ll do it again.
Thanks for this circular loop

Hello Ecalmes
Thanks for the feedback
A lovely, challenging walk, and you can spot chamois... unfortunately, you must remember that the four weekends in October are chamois hunting season...
Best regards

A truly beautiful hike that lets you explore both sides of the Carlit. Once you’ve climbed up the busier side, you’ll find yourself alone amidst scenery just as magnificent as in the first section. You’re bound to spot some chamois! Absolutely stunning!

I did this walk in early August; there were lots of families out hiking.
I walked all the way to Lake Sobirans, which is quite a hike in itself. We had a picnic by the lake – very pleasant.
A stoat came right up close to us to show off its somersaults and other antics. An impressive display!!!
There are lots of rocks all along the way, so be warned as you might feel the fatigue on the way back.
Getting to Pic Carlit is tough as the path is very steep; it’s worth knowing this before you set off. Magnificent views from the top.

A very beautiful hike

Brilliant! 👍
Spotting chamois in this wild landscape is an extraordinary experience and is worth the trip in itself.
The descent from Carlit is still quite steep, though!
Best regards

A truly beautiful hike that reveals the mountain’s many different facets.
The solitude of the off-piste section contrasts sharply with the classic ascent of the Carlit. And the chamois were still there :-)

I didn't go on that hike in winter – I've mentioned the dates. My email is dated 20 December.
Kind regards

Hello Ph.Guilpain
Actually, I didn’t mention the detour at the summit because it seemed obvious to me, but you’ve corrected that... well done for doing that hike in the middle of winter... it can’t have been that easy.
Kind regards,
G.

I have been to the summit of Carlit three times, both ways, but never exactly following this route, which I have nevertheless taken: 21–22 August 1994 (an off-trail variant via Les Pérics to camp amongst the numerous chamois below Castell Isard and set off early the next day); 31 August 2016 from Angoustrine as a round trip and 4 September 2019 as a traverse from Bones Hores (recommended) to Porté Puymorens during the 3-day Tour du Carlit.
I’m surprised the description doesn’t mention the route to the summit a few metres from the small pass, which is so natural it becomes a must. Remember to look back often on the descent to Lanous to savour the slope!
One of the most beautiful hikes in the region!
