To accommodate the flow of visitors, a car park has been set up on the D60 at the Pla de Barrès car park, and a paid shuttle service (please note that dogs must wear a muzzle on the bus - these are available for purchase at the departure point for €4) is available to take you to the Lac des Bouillouses dam, where the hike begins.
(S/E) Start at the end of the dam, leave the hotel on your right and follow the path. The start is a little rockier and steeper than the rest of the route, but you will quickly reach Estany del Viver (the junction of the loop).
(1) Turn left. A little higher up, at 2,160 metres, you will reach Estany de la Comassa, one of the largest lakes on the hike.
(2) You will quickly reach Estany Sec, which is poorly named as it is far from dry. A little higher up, at the crossroads, continue right to reach Estany de Vallell.
(3) Turn left to continue the slow climb on the alternative route. You will reach the fork at the foot of Puig Carlit.
You can shorten the route by following the Estany de Vallell on the right and joining the south-east return path.
(4) Take a hairpin bend to the right to start the return leg of the loop. Follow the Estany de Sobirans and Trebens lakes.
(5) Pass a small unguarded hut before walking along the Estany del Castellar. Cross the footbridge: here we came across several horses roaming free, magnificent! At the Estany de les Dugues, you will rejoin the path taken by those who did not take the alternative route.
(6) Continue straight ahead to reach the junction with the Estany del Viver, which you passed on the way there.
(1) Keep left and head towards the dam (S/E).
