Description of the walk

Start

The hike starts at 32 Avenue du Maréchal Foch, in the commune of Chamant (Oise).

(S) Head north-west.
Walk along the Haras de Plaisance, whose facilities can be seen through a large hedge of deciduous trees, until you reach a fork in the road in front of the Chamant Pony Club. Turn left at the Pony Club and take the bridle path that curves to the left.

After about 600 metres, this track turns right at a 90° angle. Continue straight ahead on the forest path until the next crossroads, where you turn into the first path on the right. This will take you to the remarkable Chamant water tower.

(1) Shortly after the water tower, you will cross a forest road. Continue straight ahead for 500 metres, following forest plot 291.
At the junction with another forest road, cross over and continue for another 500 metres (plot 259 on your left) until you reach the next junction, which you also cross to arrive at a third junction 500 metres further on.

(2) Turn right and, after driving alongside plots 210 and 209 for 400 metres, you will come to a racehorse training track at the corner of plot 209.

(3) Cross this track and, a few metres further on, turn left into the undergrowth (it is well cleared) following the edge of a stream. After about 100 metres off the path, you will arrive at the Bertrand Fountain.

(4) Continue for about 50 metres through the undergrowth towards the north until you reach a path on your left, which you take to reach the end of the racehorse training track.

Turn right and follow the path uphill at the foot of the Chêne à l'Image (Oak Tree with an Image), located on a red and white marked trail.

GR® signposting (red and white)

(5) Continue past the Chêne à l'Image, then turn right onto theGR® trail, which turns right at a right angle 200 metres further on. After one kilometre, it crosses a paved forest road at Poteau des Blancs Sablons.

(6) Cross the crossroads and continue along the Route des Grands Chênes, which runs alongside plot 229. TheGR® turns left after 400 metres, then curves to the right until it reaches a forest track.

(7) Turn left onto the track to pass between plots 201 and 204, then between plots 181 and 182 after crossing a small road. Continue to the next road where you will find the Croix Saint-Rieul.

No signposts

(8) Leave theGR® trail, which veers to the right, and follow the paved road to the Carrefour de la Futaie with its signpost in the centre.
Cross the crossroads and follow the Route du Cerfouillet (2nd on the right) towards the Poteau des Dames. At the Poteau des Dames, turn left (north-east) onto the Route du Mont Pagnotte.
At the Poteau du Mont Pagnotte, turn left to go to the viewpoint. A wooden observatory has been built there.

(9) Return to the Poteau du Mont Pagnotte and turn right (south-east) onto the Route de la Fontaine Aubert, which runs alongside plot 94. At the next crossroads, turn right onto the path between plots 127 and 128. This path is a little overgrown in places. Starting in the south, the path then turns south-west and, after about a kilometre, you will come to a tarmac road.

GR® signposting (red and white)

(10) Cross the road and go straight ahead onto the path at the corner of forest plot 137. You are now back on aGR® marked path. Continue to the next paved road where you will find the Croix Saint-Rieul.

(8) Turn left onto the forest path between plots 180 and 182. You passed this way earlier in the opposite direction. Cross a small road.

No signposts

(7) When theGR® turns right, leave it and continue straight ahead until you reach the corner of forest plot 250.

(11) Turn left. At the next crossroads, turn right in front of the signpost indicating "Gallo-Roman temple 200 m".
After visiting the temple site, continue by turning right at the fork, following plots 251 and 281 in succession.

(12) Turn left at the corner of plot 278. About a hundred metres further on, you will see a row of stone blocks in the undergrowth on your right, the remains of an archaeological site. Turn right into the next lane running alongside plot 278.
Turn left at the end, then, about 50 metres further on, turn right onto a path that takes you closer to a large fence that you will see on your left when you reach the crossroads of several tracks and paths.

(13) Follow the path on the right that runs parallel to this wall. It will take you straight to the track running alongside the Haras de Plaisance. You will then reach Avenue du Maréchal Foch.

(E) The hike is now complete.

Hello,
Very beautiful route. However, the only reference point we have is the Visorando GPS with compass, as there are no signs for hikers... That said, it works very well as it is...

Best regards,
Thierry and Virginie

Hello,
Two comments:
- The path immediately after the Bertrand fountain is difficult to find.
- The section from 12 to 13 is in poor condition, with the path poorly marked as it is rarely used.
Otherwise, it's a beautiful trail through the forest.

Very beautiful route. The only downside, and a real shame, is the gradual disappearance of the plot numbers, which are very useful for hikers who prefer to use a map. GPS is too easy a solution.
Otherwise, with favourable weather, this hike is very enjoyable. .

A beautiful hike that I turned into a slightly shorter walk of just under 2½ hours by turning right at point 7 and heading towards the Gallo-Roman temple. There is a beautiful forest to explore, with a lovely view of Senlis Cathedral from the oak tree shown in the photo (point 5) and some historical information to pick up here and there! Just be careful at point 12, where the path is no longer really a path and we never found the stone alignment!

Beautiful forest in autumn, even in rainy weather. Sandy terrain. 18 km but 530 m of cumulative elevation gain

Beautiful and very pleasant hike in the forest.
Easy route with GPS. A few points on the map require attention as there are no signposts.
Be careful on hunting days.

Very pretty hike, but unfortunately the paths are badly damaged by logging vehicles and there is a lot of work in progress to lay fibre optic cables through the forest. The climb up Mont Pagnotte via the GR trail in thick, slippery yellow mud is not pleasant. The route is relatively reliable, but the plot numbers are almost invisible, if not completely missing (trees cut down?). Between points 1 and 2, there is a good 500 metres between the water tower and the first crossroads, but only about 350 metres between the first and second crossroads (or two crossroads follow each other very closely; always follow the path opposite).
I followed the suggestion to go via Saint Christophe, a very pretty little village, which avoids having to walk the same stretch on the way there and back. Between points 11 and 13, the paths were particularly muddy and not very visible. You can still find your way by following the map, but I didn't see the rows of stone blocks (I did see two deer, though).

We really enjoyed it, saw lots of animals including a stag with four does very close by, and roe deer! I would recommend this walk.

A beautiful hike, especially on a warm day because it's in the forest... GPX route essential for the last hour of the hike (off the marked trail) but with GPS it's perfect!
very beautiful forest with lots of stunning trees and different species

Very beautiful hike.
Although the forest is superb, one suggestion would be to leave it for about 3 km between points 5 and 8 to discover the hamlet of Saint Christophe (beautiful church, priory and view of the region).

A hike entirely through the forest, magnificent at this time of year. We enjoyed this hike all the more as it was our first outing after lockdown!!!
The route is perfectly described: no hesitation.
Very few people around.
Amazing Gallo-Roman ruins in this location.
Our only regret: we didn't see any animals

The climb up Mont Pagnotte is pleasant, although it can be less so when the ground is slippery. There isn't much of interest to see from the observatory, as vegetation has taken over the view. Magnificent oak forests. It's surprising to discover the ruins of a Gallo-Roman temple in such a remote place.
