Route between Aumont-en-Halatte and Senlis

Former capital of the Sylvanectes Gauls, Senlis was known as Augustomagus in the 1st century, during the reign of the Roman Emperor Claudius.

From the 3rd century onwards, thanks to its walls, the Gallo-Roman enclosure of Senlis was one of the best-preserved in northern Gaul. The date of construction has still not been determined. What remains certain, as was already established in the 19th century, is that the fortifications were built after the passage of the Germanic hordes in 275–276, and after the year 278, withstanding the barbarian invasions and later the Norman raids.

Senlis boasts a history spanning ten centuries of virtually uninterrupted royal presence. The town was the site of a Merovingian and later Carolingian castle or palace from the early Middle Ages onwards; although it has completely disappeared and there is no definitive archaeological evidence, it is mentioned in numerous ancient deeds and documents.

From Aumont-en-Halatte to Senlis
This is the most enjoyable part of the hike. You may spend a little too much time on wide forest paths before reaching more pleasant trails, but the forest is really pretty, so it's fine.

Senlis
This is a charming little town (at least the old town is). However, they have opted for cars: there are cars everywhere. Every square, every street is full of cars. This spoils the beauty of the town and detracts from the pleasure of walking around it.

From Senlis to Aumont-en-Halatte
This is really the part that prevents me from giving it more than 4 stars.

  • First, you go along a country road that is quite busy (although not excessively so) with very few opportunities to walk on the hard shoulder. As usual, drivers treat country roads like race tracks, so it's not great.
  • Then you come to the D1330, which you follow fairly closely for a while. It's very busy, fast-moving and therefore very noisy. Really not a pleasant experience.
  • We then end up on a small road (still tarmac) that runs through the middle of the forest. It's quite nice (no traffic, and you can hardly hear the D1330 anymore), even if it's not as good as a footpath.

In total, easily half to two-thirds of the hike is on tarmac.

A lovely walk that combines half a beautiful hike through rolling forests and half a visit to the town of Senlis, which is rich in ancient monuments. A wonderful discovery of this medieval town that has preserved its historic cobblestones, particularly around its beautiful, little-known cathedral, and also a large chapel built by the wife of Hugues Capet before the year 1000. Surprising!
