From Quimperlé, head south towards the Carnoët National Forest (D49). Follow this road and park in the car park at the Auberge de Toulfouën.
(S/E) Take the road to the left of the shelter at the far end of the car park. After about 1 km, you’ll reach a car park which is the starting point for the forest paths. Follow the road to the left, which leads to the village of Lothéa. Walk past an equestrian centre on your left.
(1) After visiting the Chapel of Lothéa, the fountain and the bread oven, head back towards the riding centre and take the path on your left at the edge of the forest. After about 300m, the path becomes narrow and very steep.
(2) At the bottom of Chemin du Duc, head up to your right for about 50m to avoid the often muddy path that runs alongside the Laïta. This alternative route rejoins the path after about 600m.
(3) Join theGR®®34Eand follow the Laïta. On the opposite bank, enjoy the lovely view of Bothané Castle, which is in the commune of Guidel (56). After Port de la Véchène and a climb, you’ll reach the “Rocher Royal”, from where you’ll have a splendid view of the Laïta valley.
(4) Continue along theGR®®34E, passing the ruins of Carnoët Castle to reach the Bishop’s Chair.
(5) Carry on until you find a path that climbs sharply to the right.
(6) Take this path to rejoin the Chemin de Saint-Maurice and turn right onto this path. Admire the magnificent trees, some of which are over a hundred years old. After about 800m on the Chemin de Saint-Maurice, you’ll reach a crossroads.
(7) Turn right, then immediately left. Cross a small stream, then head uphill to reach the forest road leading to Carnoët Castle.
(8) Follow this road to the left and, at the next junction, continue straight on to return to the starting point (S/E).
