From Moëlan to the sea and back, via Chef-du-Bois

This fairly long walk allows you to discover the different aspects of nature in this pretty corner: cliffs overlooking the ocean, streams and green corridors, diverse forests. It also has the advantage of being able to start directly on foot from the village of Moëlan. Another advantage is that there are many variations that allow you to make the walk shorter or longer.

Description of the walk

(S/E) Leave the MLC car park and turn right onto Rue du Pont-à-Laert (D24) for about 100 metres. Turn left towards the hamlet of Kerdoussal. Continue until you reach a barrier, then turn right onto a small road, a small path, and then another small road until you reach the D24, Route de Clohars.

(1) Follow it carefully to the left until you reach a place called Le Menhir.

(2) Turn right into a dead end. Pass the first mountain bike trail on your right, marked by a sign, and follow the next one on the right, which is much clearer. Follow a stream and continue to a road at the hamlet of Kerioualen.

(3) Take the road to the right for a short distance, and at the end of the hamlet take a path on the left (rubbish bins). In wet weather, the start of this section can be very muddy or even flooded. In this case, take the road above which crosses the hamlet and descend to the right towards the path at the end of it. Continue south-west and, after a short, fairly steep climb, you will arrive at a crossroads.

(4) Turn left, then left again after about 100 metres, and continue until you reach a road in the hamlet of Pen an Prat.

(5) Take the road to the left and follow it to Chef du Bois.

(6) Almost at the end of Chef du Bois, turn left onto a road, then take a path marked with yellow signs (PR®2). Follow this path to a stream.

(7) Cross it and follow the PR® which leads to the hamlet of Saint-Thamec

(8) Turn right and cross the hamlet, still following the markings, until you reach a fountain and a wash house.

(9) At the road, take the one on the right, cross another stream and continue towards the hamlet of Kerampellan.

(10) In the centre of the hamlet, take the first road on the right, then the first on the left and again on the right into a street that quickly turns into a beautiful path leading to the coast at Porz Lamat, where you will join the GR®34.

GR®34: marked in white and red

(11) Follow it to the right.

(12) At Portec cove, rejoin the two shortcut trails leading from Saint-Thamec. Continue on the GR®34.

End of the GR®34

(13) At Porz Bali cove, take the small path on the right that climbs northwards. When you reach Kercarn, follow the road through the hamlet to a crossroads.

(14) Take the track to the right to return to the road at Chef du Bois.

(15) Follow it briefly to the left, then descend to the right along the track (signposted) leading to Moulin l'Abbé. (From here, you can explore the right bank of the Merrien River via the coastal path or the pretty Bois de Placamen, with a picnic table at the end in an ideal location.)

(16) Cross the footbridge over the river and climb up the right-hand side via a fairly steep path until you reach a four-way crossroads.

(17) Turn right and continue to a group of agricultural greenhouses.

(18) Then take a small path opposite, slightly to the right (not marked on maps but perfectly passable and pretty). After crossing a wood, you will come out onto a small road

(19) Take it to the left.

(20) At a hairpin bend on the right, continue straight ahead along the path that leads into the woods. When you reach a road, continue straight ahead until you reach the road leading to a sewage treatment plant on the right.

(21) Take it to the right, go around the water treatment plant on the left via a small path in a meadow on the right to reach the stream, and follow it until it comes out onto a road. The path is not marked on maps, but it is clear on the ground.

(22) Go down a wooden staircase to continue following the stream along a dirt track, visible on the OSM background and well maintained (if it is too muddy, there is a parallel track on the right, slightly above), then a series of footbridges. Cross the River Merrien and continue via Pourmadenn Pont to Laër.

(23) Turn right, take a larger footbridge over the Merrien River and reach the outdoor theatre. Go around the boules court and arrive at the back of the MLC car park (S/E).

Notes

The first section, from the start to point (1), is a bit unpleasant, mainly because you have to follow the D24 for 700 metres, which is straight and quite busy, with little space for pedestrians. If you have two vehicles, it may be a good idea to leave one at (S/E) and the other at (1) (parking available). At the end of the hike, you can return to the first vehicle and use it to pick up the second one at (1).

Shortcuts.

(5) Shortly after starting this road, turn right onto the pretty path that leads directly down to point (16), marked by a "coastal path" sign set back from the road.

(9) Before the fountain, take the small path on the right, which will take you more quickly to the coast at (12).

Before the entrance to (10), at the car park, take the path to the right, again to reach the coast (12).

Alternative route: ( 13) continue along the coastal path to Merrien harbour and along the left bank of the Merrien river to point (16).

(21): if this section is too flooded, continue along the road and turn right twice to reach the point (22).

The most beautiful walk we’ve ever done on Visorando! Ever-changing scenery: the sea, the countryside, woodland, hamlets, sunken lanes...
The start is the only bit to skip... but you have to do it. A few wet paths, so I recommend good shoes!
A slight difficulty at point 14. Go to the right of the house at the junction to immediately find a grassy path.
Another tricky bit at point 21. The path is below the track you’re on, in the meadow running alongside it.
Thanks Visorando!!!

A beautiful and varied hike between sunken paths and the seaside. Bucolic and often picturesque. There is an unpleasant stretch on the main road (heavy traffic) but fortunately it is short (300 metres). A little challenging in places, but overall this route is pleasant.
