Land and sea via Le Pouldu, departing from Cohars-Carnoët

At the end of the 19th century, following Pont-Aven, Le Pouldu in Clohars-Carnoët became a refuge for several painters from the Pont-Aven School, such as Paul Gauguin, Meyer de Haan, Paul Sérusier, Charles Filiger and many others. The seaside and the lush countryside inspired these artists, who captured them in their paintings.
The countryside sections have retained many lovely, shaded sunken paths. Three restored chapels and a windmill add a lovely heritage touch to this walk.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park by the church in Clohars-Carnoët.

(S/E) With your back to the church, head down Rue Saint-Jacques, passing the town hall, until you reach a Fork in the road (marked by a cross).

(1) Leave Rue Saint-Jacques and take the path opposite, heading due south, past residential areas, crossing several streets until you reach Rue de Vinn Bihan.

(2) Follow it straight on, turn left onto Chemin des Deux Fours and arrive at a roundabout.

(3) Go round this roundabout on the right and continue slightly to the right along Route de Porsach. After a dead end on the left, at the next Fork in the road, turn left and find a path on the left.

GRP® marked in yellow and red

(4) Turn left, follow this path south-east then due south until you reach a road.

(5) Take it to the left, cross the hamlet of Kerbeurnes and, at the exit, look for a new path on the left.

(6) Turn left, heading due north, onto this path; ignore the one branching off to the right; reach the access road to Le Héder and continue straight on until you reach the D24 at a place called Kercousquet.

(7) Cross it carefully to visit the Kercousquet windmill, which has been restored thanks to a local association, then turn back. Back on the road, follow it to the left, pass a roundabout then turn left onto a path near a cross. Continue to a three-way junction where the route leaves the GRP®.

PR® marked in yellow

(8) Turn right, join a road at Kerandouaré and follow it, turning left at the first junction and right at the next. Continue due south and join the D24 near Saint-Maudet Primary School.

(9) Cross it with care, head straight ahead and continue along the path to reach the Saint-Maudet Chapel on your right. Continue straight on then turn left towards Le Pouldu campsite. As you pass, look out for the chapel’s discreet, somewhat neglected votive fountain.

(10) Walk past this campsite and the next few to reach the Notre-Dame de la Paix Chapel (with beautiful stained-glass windows) and the calvary, before coming out onto Rue du Philosophe Alain.

(11) Turn left, follow this street, pass the entrance to a five-star campsite, then first turn right then left to cross Rue des Grands Sables (D49) with care . Continue along Rue de Kerzelleg. Ignore a path on the left and arrive near a grassy area with picnic tables.

(12) Turn onto the path on the left, pass a wash house and arrive at the D24.

(13) Cross it carefully and continue due north to reach Anse de Sterlivin and the Laïta, where you will find the GR®34.

GR®34 marked in white and red

Follow the coastal path to the right to reach a flight of steps leading down to the Pouldu Marina (where a foot ferry operates from May to September, taking passengers to Guidel Plage), offering views of the Laïta and its estuary.

(14) Continue along the Laïta via the boulevard and arrive at Chemin de Saint-Julien, the first street on the left.

(15) Turn left to head down to the coastal path (viewpoint offering a view of the mouth of the Laïta). Follow this path to reach the pilot’s mast, built in 1847 to guide boats travelling up the river.

(16) Continue past the fort below, built in 1850 to protect the various ports from attacks by the English fleet. Pass the small Porguerrec Beach (“rocky harbour”) and arrive at Grands Sables Beach, around which numerous villas were built from the mid-19th century onwards. The eco-museum is located on the right.

(17) Walk around Plage des Grands Sables, past the tourist office, then further on past a blockhouse – a memorial site open to the public – and arrive at the Rochers de la Grenouille and de la Tortue.

(18) Continue past the Bellangenet beaches, a cross and, a little further on, a memorial in the shape of a ship’s anchor. Pass the Kerrou beaches with their water sports facilities and arrive at a cove where a stream flows into the sea.

(19) Ignore a path branching off to the right, continue along the coastal path and pass another cove and another stream. You’ll reach a car park where the route leaves the GR®34.

(20) Turn right and follow the small road. At the Fork in the road at the hamlet of Kerguivarec, turn left to find a path.

(21) Follow this path to the right, heading due north, cross a road and continue straight on to the hamlet of Quéon.

(22) Leave the GRP® on your right and continue left to the hamlet of Kerrine.

(23) Turn right, cross the hamlet and continue along the small road which leads to the D16.

PR® marked in yellow

(24) Cross it carefully and keep to the right. Continue along the path which joins a road; follow this to the right until you reach the community centre. At the Fork in the road, turn left to reach the Chapelle Saint-Jacques, situated in a large park with a rose garden.

(25) At the nearby crossroads, continue straight ahead to reach the fork from the outward journey.

(1) Turn left, then continue straight on along the reverse route of the outward journey to reach the church car park (S/E).
