The Plough, Little London

Start: The Plough, Little London (RG26 5EP) Grid ref. SU 621 598

(S/E) Leave the pub and go about 200yds down the road (South-East). Opposite an old chapel, take the lane on the left to a small stables. Go over the stile and through the yard to take a track slightly right or straight on.

(1) Follow this for 200yds until the footpath is signed into a field through an iron gate. Keep the hedge on your right until you reach some outbuildings.

(2) Then turn left across the fields. The path kinks right at a stile and footbridge over a stream, and in 400yds more comes out through another iron gate onto a lane.

(3) Cross this to another footpath that goes left before veering right. Follow this with the hedge on your right until it goes into a wood. In 600yds it emerges onto a road.

(4) Cross and enter Pamber Forest. Take one of the many paths forward until you reach the main North-North-West-South-South-East straight path through the forest.

(5) Turn left until you reach the gate and stile at the end. Go up the field for 300 yds, then turn left for the pub. (S/E)

Driving to start: About 16 miles from Newbury. Go past AWE Aldermaston, then right at the roundabout into Soke Road. Follow this to Silchester, where turn right at The Calleva Arms, and go down this road for 3 miles.

Refreshments: The Plough, Little London an old-fashioned pub that serves excellent and reasonably priced baguettes. It has decent draught beer, usually Ringwood from the cask.
