Waypoints
- S/E : km 0 - alt. 88 m
- 1 : km 0.03 - alt. 89 m - Turn right out of the carpark. Head westwards to the River Derwent along the stone track. Go if the stepping stones (if the water is shallow enough and you are brave enough. Otherwise cross the river by walking along the path downstream and using the bridge. Return upstream on the path on the other side.
- 2 : km 2.29 - alt. 115 m - Continue on the path past the Youth Hostel. There is a short, very easy scrambling section beyond. The path drifts away from the river and then comes back again. Cross the river using the bridge to the road. Cross over the road and continue along the lane on the other side.
- 3 : km 2.74 - alt. 106 m - From the road, follow the fingerpost on to the fell. An obvious track winds around to head southwards.
- 4 : km 3.69 - alt. 251 m - Just before the gill, take the track that branches off uphill to the right. There are some stone steps a little later that will confirm you are on the correct track. Follow the obvious track up to the top of the ridge and then to the top of Thornythwaite Fell.
- 5 : km 4.88 - alt. 568 m - Return back to Strands Bridge along the same track as the outward route.
- 6 : km 7.22 - alt. 103 m - On returning to the road, head along it eastwards (there is a bit of a pedestrian track at the verge).
- 7 : km 7.67 - alt. 101 m - Follow the fingerpost to Stonethwaite. Signage is good through the fields.
- 8 : km 8.08 - alt. 98 m - On reaching the church, continue down the road and then take the road to the right towards Stonethwaite.
- 9 : km 8.81 - alt. 100 m - Follow the signed track that follows Stonethwaite Beck upstream.
- 10 : km 10.06 - alt. 136 m - At the junction with Langstrath Beck, follow the obvious track that follows the beck upstream. Follow it to Blackmoss Pot.
- 11 : km 11.87 - alt. 183 m - Return back down the Langstrath Valley using the same track used on the outbound route.
- 12 : km 13.41 - alt. 146 m - On return to the footbridge, cross it to the east side of Langstrath Beck. Follow the obvious track northwards alongside Langstrath Beck.
- 13 : km 13.81 - alt. 132 m - On reaching the junction of becks, cross the footbridge. Follow the obvious track back down the valley towards Rosthwaite. This is well signed.
- 14 : km 16.58 - alt. 88 m - Turn left over the footbridge. On reaching the road, turn left and then almost immediately right to return to Rosthwaite carpark.
- S/E : km 16.77 - alt. 88 m
Other walks in the area
Castle Crag to Seatoller
Popular walk to visit Castle Crag and the little caves in the Borrowdale forest. Dog friendly. Can be a bit challenging to go up Castle Crag when raining as the slates on the path can be very slippery.
Grange & Watendlath from Rosthwaite
Combining the delights of Borrowdale with the rural charm of Watendlath, this Lake District walk offers some wonderful views and relatively easy walking. Route finding is generally easy although there is a steady ascent from Lodore up to Watendlath.
Rosthwaite to Wadendlath
Moderate circular walk to Watendlath tarn from Rosthwaite village. Watendlath tarn is a gorgeous little tarn in the middle of big summits. Great views the entire walk. Dog friendly.
YHA hopping in The Lake District - YHA Borrowdale to YHA Black Sail

The YHA is a great institution and I guess most fell walkers have stayed at a hostel at some time in their lives. Funny how they were created "to help all, especially young people of limited means, to greater knowledge, love and care of the countryside, particularly by providing hostels or other simple accommodation for them on their travels". Here's a collection of routes starting or finishing at a YHA in The Lakes. Along the way, there are 4 Wainwrights and 5 tarns.
YHA hopping in The Lake District - YHA Borrowdale to YHA Grasmere
This is a walk from the Borrowdale Valley over to Easdale Valley but it's also a ridge walk with great views over Far Easedale Gill and the surrounding landscape. Helm Crag is also known as The Lion and The Lamb due to it's profile when seen from the A591. Here's a collection of routes starting or finishing at a YHA in The Lakes. Along the way, there are three Wainwrights, one lake and one pub.
Scafell Pike from Borrowdale

The classic and well trodden ascent of Scafell Pike from Seathwaite in Borrowdale. Ascending via Grains Gill to Great End and then Esk Hause and Broad Crag. The descent is via the 'Corridor Route' to Styhead Tarn and then back to Seathwaite.
Grange Fell, Watendlath and High lodore
Great circular walk going to Watendlath Tarn. This valley is not really popular. Dog friendly walk.
Good navigation skills are needed during this section as the path is not visible.
Cat Bells from Grange
A short and fairly easy, circular walk up the ever popular Cat Bells. Starting from parking on the roadside just outside the village of Grange, this walk ascends Cat Bells from the South and descends north to join paths through the parkland and woods above and beside Derwent Water.
