Castle Crag to Seatoller

Popular walk to visit Castle Crag and the little caves in the Borrowdale forest. Dog friendly. Can be a bit challenging to go up Castle Crag when raining as the slates on the path can be very slippery.

Description of the walk

Start: Rosthwaite National Trust Car Park Grid ref. NY 257 148

(S/E) From the car park walk towards the center of Rosthwaite village (opposite to the main road) to join the Cumbria Way path. Leaving the village, the path follows the river Derwent North-West and crosses it. After the bridge take right to stay on the Cumbria Way (the river is now on your right-hand side). Continue on the Cumbria Way passing by Pennybridge Dub, then entering High Hows Wood. Keep on the Cumbria Way following the river Derwent (North). It is possible to do some little detours to see the caves. Keep on this path until arriving at Gowder Dub and an intersection of paths.

(1) Take left (leaving the Cumbria Way on the right) to walk in the valley along Broadslack Gill and below Castle Crag. Keep straight on this path until seeing a path on the right.

(2) Turn left to walk to the summit of Castle Crag.

(3) Once at the summit of Castle Crag, walk back to the junction.

(2) Then turn left to keep walking on the path between the summits (South). Continue straight to use the footbridge to cross Tongue Gill. Then keep straight on the path (South) crossing a gill at the footbridge. Then keep straight on the path with a dry stone wall on the left hand side, cross Scaleclose Gill and keep straight until seeing a path on the left.

(4) Turn left (South-East) and then directly left (do not take the path straight going to the car park). Keep on this path that is following Johnny Wood by its bottom. The path will then follow the river Derwent.

(5) Turn right to cross the bridge then take directly left on the path that will bring you back to Rosthwaite. At the road turn left then right at Yew tree farm to join the car park. (S/E)
