Description der Wandertour

Start : The Bertie Arms (PE9 4SZ) Grid ref. TF 063 076

(S/E) From The Bertie Arms walk South towards Main Road (A1175) and turn left (South) along it for around 450 m. As the road curves left, go straight ahead (South) at the junction. Carry on the same bearing along Barnack Road and 130 m after crossing the bridge over River Welland find a gate on your right.

(1) Turn right, exiting the road onto field paths and walk on the path towards the electric lines (South-West). Walk for around 230 m walking under the lines and in between the edges. As you reach the wooded area bear South to cross the railway lines. Past the lines and walk South-West across the field to reach Barnack Road (B1443).

(2) Turn right (North-West) onto the road that goes past Burghley House.

(3) After 1.8 Km or so, exit from the road to the field footpath on your right (North). Walk across the railway lines, then across a first bridge over River Welland. At the end of the bridge, keep straight to cross a second bridge.

(4) At the footpath T-junction, turn right (East). Cross a bridge over River Gwash and walk to a path junction. Turn right (South East) and walk along with River Welland on your right-hand side for around 1.8 Km to reach back the road you walked before.

(5) You are now back onto the road where you turn left (North) to retrace your steps to the pub. (S/E)

Apologies, my mistake about the road number running in front of Burghley, with the trees now in full leaf though I can understand why we didn’t have a view , but it was a very busy road and not enjoyable to walk along as we had to keep stopping to retreat into the verge to let the traffic go past.
The fact that I didn’t take any photos on the walk just confirms our opinion.
We’ve enjoyed many a walk around this beautiful area in the past and I’m sure we will do again, this one just didn’t do it for us I’m afraid.

I am sorry you thought this was dissapointing, but to clarify some of your points, there is a very small amount of walking on the A1175 at the start and finish of the walk. There is a longish stretch on the B1443 which passes Burleigh house, and you can clearly see the house from the roadside footpath, see one of my photos. The walk back I agree is not on the bank of the Welland but follows it. Walked at the time we did, I have never seen such splendid field of Cowslips. hope you enjoy other walks in this area of England.

We did this on a beautiful sunny day in May and got off to a great start with a lovely coffee at the Bertie Arms, beautiful pub in a gorgeous setting. However the walk itself was uninspiring, a fair portion of the outward leg you are walking on the busy A1175 past the entrance to Burghley House, but with no sight of it from the road at all, and on the return portion although walking on a track you don’t really walk by the river Welland, just in the same general direction with an occasional glimpse.
Not a walk we’ll be repeating.
