Description of the walk

At Réotier, follow the winding road carefully towards Tête de Vautisse. Pass through Mikéou, where the tarmac road gives way to a forest track. Continue, staying on the main track at all times; ignore the first junction for “Cabane du Vallon” and carry on towards Vautisse. Pass through the hamlets of Les Eymars and Le Villard. You’ll come to a junction signposted ‘Cabane de la Selle’, ‘Cabane de l’Alpe’ and ‘Cabane du Vallon’; here, turn left and park, if possible, at the Cabane du Vallon.

(S/E) Behind the Cabane du Vallon, take the path that climbs uphill, crossing straight across a vast meadow where the first Croix des Résinières stands in the centre. The path climbs quite steeply through the woods; keep a close eye out for the cairns. You’ll reach the track.

(1) Turn left onto it and, at the next bend, leave the track and take the path leading uphill to the left. You’ll reach a large clearing; walk straight up through it until you reach a large wooden cross: this is the Croix des Résinières.

(2) Continue along the path to the track, then follow it to the right for a short distance. Cut across, continuing straight on through a bend, and climb until you rejoin the track; follow it to La Cabane de l’Alp.

(3) Just past this, at the car park, turn left towards La Tête de Fouran. Cross the large mountain pasture heading due south, climbing slightly. Look out for a pass on the left, below the Tête de Pinfol. Make your way there using the tracks left by the sheep.

(4) At the Col sous Pinfol, head left, towards the east, following the ridge that descends to the Tête de Fouran. See Practical Information.

(5) Descend east-north-east across the mountain pasture until, amongst the trees on the descent, you spot cairns and yellow markings. Pass a small clearing where there is a simple stone structure: this is the Jas de Fouran.

(6) The path continues through the forest, heading north, then gradually westwards. It runs alongside a rocky ridge before reaching the bottom of a small valley.

(7) Cross the stream and climb a little. Descend through the forest to a shepherd’s hut.

(8) This is the Cabane du Vallon (the new one). Continue downhill until you reach the track and the car park (S/E).

Notes

  • (3) Water sources: Cabane du Vallon, Cabane de l’Alp car park.
  • Between (4) and (5) On the ridge before the Tête de Fouran and between (6) and (7) on the narrow ridge after the Jas de Fouran, the path is somewhat exposed – take care to avoid slipping.
  • Depending on the season, watch out for sheepdogs guarding flocks. Behave appropriately.
  • A small point of clarification: in the guidebook, the name ‘Cabane du Vallon’ is given to the first hut visible. This is the old shepherd’s hut, which is not named on the IGN map. The ‘Cabane du Vallon’ named by the IGN is the new hut situated further on, which you will see on the return leg of the walk.
  • Magnificent views – don’t forget your binoculars.

Very beautiful hike. But the signposting is poor. Follow the GPS track very closely.
.
We did it on a very hot, sunny day. Splendid view from the ridge.

A superb walk that would be impossible to follow without Visorando. The route is marked with cairns and signposts... but not everywhere, far from it.
the icing on the cake was that we didn't see a single person on 15 July. Pure bliss!
Many thanks to Patembrun

Ah, that was three weeks ago; I’ve been a bit slow in posting this comment. I was meant to go back there with the Chorges walking club, but the weather played up. Thanks anyway.

We did the circular walk the other way round (clockwise). The start isn’t easy to find, but after that it’s marked with yellow signs, except on the upper section. A superb walk.

Thank you for this initial feedback; it’s true that I, too, always use the GPS track on Visorando and occasionally the route description. That said, I can see you enjoyed the walk, and that’s what matters most. Thank you, and I hope you enjoy your walks.

No problem finding a place to park near the Vallon hut. It was a bit tricky at first finding the way to the cross, with tall grass and stinging nettles, before we found the cairns. The return journey wasn’t always straightforward across the grassy slopes below the Tête du Fouran, before we came across the yellow posts and proper signposting.
A really lovely walk. Thanks to the GPS – it wasn’t always easy to follow, but with a bit of searching you do manage to find your way..
