On the gentle hills of Arette

A lovely little walk starting from the charming village of Arette! Although it mainly follows small roads, you’ll still discover some surprising paths right in the heart of the village...

Description of the walk

Park in the car park near the doctor’s surgery.

(S/E) Turn your back on the doctor’s surgery and head to your right towards a bridge. (Take care on the road. ) Cross this bridge and, 20 metres further on, turn left. You’ll find yourself at a junction of paths. Take the path that climbs straight up to the right (not shown on the map). Continue until you reach a road.

(1) At the top of the track, where it meets the road, turn right. Go round the hairpin bend and carry on until you reach another junction.

(2) Turn left, go through a cattle grid and drive past a farm. After the farm, at the junction, keep left. Follow and stay on this road for about 2.5 km. You will then pass the hamlet of Casamayou. Continue straight on for about 250 m until you reach a junction with a grassy track leading down to the left.

(3) Take the grassy track downhill until you reach a road at a wide bend. Carefully join the road, heading downwards to the right. 50 m further on, on your left, a steep track climbs to the left.

(4) Leave the road and take this path. Climb the few steps. At the junction, keep to the right. Then take the next path which leads back down to the right (not shown on the map). This takes you down to the bank of the Gave. Here, turn right and then cross the first small bridge on the left. As you come out of the small bridge, turn left again to cross a very pretty park. At the end of the park, there is a small passageway with steps.

(5) Take this path. Carefully join the road by turning right and head back to the car park (S/E).

A lovely circular walk in the hills above Arette.
At a place called Camou (sign advertising cheese for sale), after passing through the cattle grid, there really is a house with several dogs – some border collies and a Patou – but we walked past quietly as they were busy with another group of people with dogs!

We had to stop the walk because the route passed by a farm where two large dogs were running loose… we tried to go round the farm but couldn’t (the hedges were impassable). So we turned back
