In the footsteps of Couperin from Verneuil

A bucolic hike through woods, fields, meadows and gardens, playing leapfrog with the Yerres and Ru de Bréon rivers. Two village crossings and, in Chaumes-en-Brie, a tribute to the musicians of the Couperin family and a farm with surprising architecture in the heart of the Brie region.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Slices of Brie from station to station

Description of the walk

Starting point and access: Verneuil-l’Etang station.
- Transilien - Line P, on the section between Paris-Est and Provins.
Take the only exit, platform 1, for trains from Paris to Provins (if arriving in the opposite direction, platform 2, take the footbridge).

Red and white + blue markings

(S/E) On leaving the station, turn right into Rue de la Gare. Ignore Rue Pasteur on the left and then Rue La Fontaine on the right. At the stop sign (bar-tobacconist’s), continue straight ahead, still on Rue de la Gare. At the T-junction, turn left into Rue Arthur Chaussy. Cross Rue Jean Jaurès on the right-hand side.

(1) Cross Rue Édouard Vaillant on the left and continue along Rue Arthur Chaussy, which curves to the right after about 200 m.

Red and white + blue + green markings

(2) At the end of the street, at a junction, continue straight ahead along the grassy path that starts to the left of an EDF substation (no markings here). Walk along the edge of a field (on your left) and a woodland (on your right).

(3) At the junction by the corner of the Grange Saint-Père (a beautiful farmhouse), turn right (east) onto a good path, still running along the edge of the woodland. After passing between two fields, walk alongside a fenced-off woodland on your left and you will come to another junction (a metal post with multiple markers).

Red and white + green markings

(4) Turn left (north) onto a shaded path that descends slightly. Leave the woodland and continue along the edge, with the village of Chaumes-en-Brie in view, recognisable by its church steeple and water tower.

(5) Pass through a metal barrier and cross the D32 road (take care). Pass through a metal gate and take the wide Allée Jehan Michel, which heads north, leaving a small house on your left. The shaded avenue is in fact the embankment of an old railway line, and the small house is a former gatekeeper’s cottage. Cross the bridge over the Yerres (a lovely viewpoint) and continue along the tree-lined avenue.

(6) At a point where the right-hand side of the avenue opens out, take a narrow path that heads downhill to the left. Keep an eye out for this path: a red and white Red Cross on a tree further along on the right; a red and white marker on a small tree on the left at the start of the path. Follow this narrow path through the undergrowth or along small plots of land. Cross a stream (footbridge) then first turn right then left. Continue winding your way between the fenced-off gardens.

(7) At the end of this path, turn right onto a tree-lined avenue (ignore a yellow arrow pointing left; there are two PR® signs here).

Green and yellow markings (sparse and intermittent, with the two colours alternating)

(8) At Place Massa (more of a crossroads than a square), turn left at a 90° angle into Rue Parmentier (let the GR®1 head north). Cross a larger street (Rue Foix, with a view of the church on the right) and turn into Rue Louis Quinton. Note two plaques in this street commemorating the Couperin family (famous musicians), one on the right-hand side and one on the left-hand side.

(9) At the war memorial, turn right into Rue du Cloître. At the next junction, first turn left then right onto Rue de l’Archelet. Pass Rue Agasse (agasse = magpie; view of the church on the right) and continue along Rue de la Poterne. Cross another street and pass the water tower. At the next junction, turn left into Rue René Quinton. Opposite No. 3 on the street, turn right (sign for “Clos des Hauts de Bréjon”). Walk about twenty metres towards a house.

(10) Turn left onto a narrow path. Keep an eye out for this very inconspicuous path: on the left, a green marker on a small tree and a house with a terrace; on the right, a wooden gate. Walk between fenced-in gardens and emerge onto a large meadow with a cluster of oak trees in the middle. Continue westwards, keeping the meadow on your right and a fence on your left.

(11) You will come out onto a small road; follow it to the right and downhill. After a succession of two left-right bends, let the main road turn left and head down Chemin de Thiou (a dead-end), which continues as a path leading to the Gués de Thiou.

(12) Cross a stream, either by wading or via a footbridge on the left of the path. Then turn right to cross the second stream via a footbridge. Continue along a wide path which soon gives way to a small road. Ignore a path branching off to the left (EDF substation) and continue uphill. At the Stop sign, continue straight ahead along La Grande Rue (ignore the yellow arrow indicating a right turn). After a few dozen metres (sign for “La Billoterie”), ignore the road on the left, continue along La Grande Rue and walk past the Ferme de Forest on your right.

(13) At the junction opposite the farm’s main entrance, turn left towards Chaumes-en-Brie and pass a beautiful ivy-covered house on the right. At a fork (Croix Sainte-Hélène), take the path on the right which enters a wood. Further on, walk along the edge of the wood (on the left) and fields (on the right). Enter the woodland again and stay on the main path, heading south-west then south-south-west. After two tight bends (left then right), you’ll come out onto the D48 road.

(14) Cross the road with care, go past the forest gate opposite and continue along a path through the woodland. At the fork immediately ahead, take the right-hand path (the widest one), heading due south. Descend gently through the woodland, then along the edge of the forest and finally between two hedges. Cross the Yerres on a wooden bridge and climb up the opposite side with a hedge on your left. At the top of the hill, note a tower and an old well on the right; ignore a small road on the left and continue south along a path.

(15) At the T-junction, turn left onto a wide track and walk along the left-hand side of gardens full of fruit trees.

No signposting

(16) At the next junction (house on the left), cross the small road and take a grassy path heading east which quickly turns left (north-east). At the edge of a wood, turn right (east; do not enter the wood). At the T-junction ahead, turn left onto a wide path and walk alongside the grounds of Maurevert Castle on your left.

(17) At the junction, continue straight on and head down to the next junction, near the River Yerres.

(18) Then turn right and follow the river intermittently on your left. Cross the Bois de Beaumont and pass a football pitch on your left.

(19) Cross the D402 and follow it to the right for about thirty metres. Take the first path on the left. Walk between the fields and go round a copse on the left. Ignore a path on the right, then go round the La Grange Saint-Père farm on the right. You will come to a junction you passed at the start of the walk.

Red and white + blue + green markings

(3) Go straight on and follow the edge of a wood on your left.

(2) At the end of the path, continue along Rue Arthur Chaussy.

No markings

(1) As you come out of the left-hand bend, turn right into Rue Édouard Vaillant. Cross Rue Jules Guesde and continue straight ahead.

Yellow markings

(20) At the next junction, turn left into Rue Pasteur towards the station. At the end of the street, turn right to return immediately to the station, with a clear view of Verneuil-l'Étang (S/E).

Notes

Train timetables: see the Transilien website.

For motorists: parking is available in the station car park.

The woodland crossed between points (13) and (16) is private property: do not stray from the path. Most of the route is shaded. Some sections may be muddy in wet weather: wear suitable footwear.

In Verneuil-l'Etang:
- Pizzeria opposite the station (S/E).
- Restaurant on Rue de la Gare, near the junction with Rue Pasteur.
- Bar-tobacconist’s (closed on Sundays) at the junction of Rue de la Gare and Rue Jules Guesde.
- Bakery on Rue Arthur Chaussy.
In Chaumes-en-Brie: various shops, including a bar and a bakery on Rue Foix, near (8).

A 1:25,000 map is required (at the very least, the one accompanying this description).

Alternative route:
At point (16), if you wish to stay on the marked route and are not put off by the tarmac, follow the small road to the right with the yellow markings. Cross the D402 and continue straight ahead into Rue Édouard Vaillant. Cross Rue Georges Brassens on the right-hand side. (20) Take the next right, Rue Pasteur, and follow it to the station (S/E). Allow for around 11.5 km for this shortened version.

Walk completed by the author on 20 September 2015. The route connecting points (16) and (3) has not been tried by the author but was suggested by fdhellemmes and confirmed by Padeloup, to whom we extend our thanks.

Worth a visit

In Verneuil-L'Etang:
- La Grange Saint-Père, a beautiful farmhouse between and (4).

In Chaumes-en-Brie:
- Bridge over the Yerres and a lovely view of the village between and (6).
- Between (8) and (10), commemorative plaques honouring the Couperin family, musicians of the 17th and 18th centuries, the first two of whom, Louis and Marc-Roger, were born in Chaumes-en-Brie, and the most famous of whom was François (1668–1733).
- Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul Church (13th–18th centuries) between (8) and (10).
- Gués de Thiou (12).

Hello,

Thanks to fdhellemmes for suggesting a less tarmac-heavy alternative at the end of the route, and to Padeloup for confirming that it’s feasible!

I have just amended the route to include this alternative and updated the description accordingly. Please do check that I have accurately reflected your suggestions.

As a result, the tarmac section at the end is now presented as a short alternative in the practical information section.

Kind regards,
Netra

A lovely walk, but I agree with fdhellemmes about the end. We took this alternative route, which only adds 2.7 km to the walk and avoids the industrial estate (personally, I think it’s a shame to end such a lovely walk by crossing this rather unsightly area). The detour is really lovely, from the little road leading to the castle (with its very pretty houses) to the woodland along the banks of the Yerres, and then the path across the fields to Verneuil station. A total of 14.3 km, which is very manageable, even for the two teenagers who were with us.

A varied and very enjoyable walk. Crossing the ford was a lovely surprise. The end of the route through the industrial estate is a bit of a let-down.

A lovely, easy walk that I’ve now done about ten times. Thanks, Netra!! An old railway line runs high above the river – it’s stunning – and the Forest Farm is magnificent (you can buy excellent flour there on Wednesdays). The route features rolling, rural sections. The ford is often submerged in winter, but it’s easy to get around it by walking 50 metres up the road.
Thanks again!

An easy route that we extended eastwards after No. 2, heading towards Argentière before stopping for lunch in Chaumes en Brie, covering around 15 km. However, the paths were very muddy and not particularly interesting.

Superb hike (done 5 times!) THANK YOU!! Magnificent shaded path on the old railway line between 3 and 5, magnificent Forest farm at 9 (flour can be purchased by appointment or on Wednesday afternoons). On one of my visits, the ford was spectacularly submerged, but fortunately it was easy to get around by taking the small road to the south. I perfected the route on my way back: after 11, continue north-east along the path beside Maurevert Castle Park. The path descends to the banks of the Yerres, then turn right (without crossing the Yerres) and follow the Yerres intermittently through the Beaumont woods. When you reach the sports grounds, cross the D402 and head south on a path surrounded by fields that leads back to the small pond at the Grange St Père farm, and from there take the same route back towards 1 and then the station.

Hello, thank you for this superb and very well-described hike. I did it in November and again in April, and enjoyed it both times. It's rural and not very busy, with quick access from the Gare de l'Est train station.

Overall, it's a nice hike, and there's plenty of variety: villages, fields, forests...

However, the last part is fairly average: there's a long section not far from the N36, which is very noisy (cars, trucks, etc.). And you end up on the Maurevert road/Chemin des Cantines: a very ugly place in the middle of a rather dingy "industrial" area (but you don't stay there for long).
