Park at the foot of the Catholic church in the centre of the village.
(S/E) Start the walk by heading up through Westhoffenen from the north-north-west (Rue Birris), then further on to the left, taking Rue du Staedtelt and Rue du Westerend ''(Blue Triangle signposting leading out of the village and up through the vineyards and fruit trees to a surprising viewpoint, given the low altitude)''.
(1) After the Jewish cemetery, take Rue des Vignes on the right uphill and reach a multi-way junction.
(2) Continue along the second path on the right (almost opposite) which climbs steeply. Ignore a path branching off to the left and reach the second 90° bend to the right.
(3) Take the path opposite which leads into the woods. At the next fork, take the hairpin bend to the right (Blue Triangle signpost) and head for the orientation table with its viewpoint.
(4) Continue for a few metres then take a path climbing to the left. You will soon reach the ‘gloriette’, a hexagonal shelter in excellent condition. Continue straight ahead until you reach a cross-country track, near a high-voltage power line.
(5) Turn left, pass under the power line and, at the next junction, turn right. Walk for about fifty metres and take the path on the left until you reach a crossroads of tracks near a shelter.
(6) Take the second track on the right, towards Brechlingen. At the three-way junction, on the edge of the forest, keep left and continue to the first path on the right.
(7) Take this path, join the tarmac road and continue to the right until the bottom of the descent, where you will find the start of a path on the left at the foot of a 200-year-old oak tree.
(8) Take this path, which starts with a hairpin bend to the left, and follow the cycle path on your right until the next fork.
(9) Take the path that climbs to the left and reach a four-way junction.
(10) Turn right, join a track and follow it to the left until you quickly reach a crossroads.
(11) Turn right at a right angle and head down into the village of Cosswiller.
(12) At the D824, turn left, follow it for about a hundred metres and turn left onto Rue des Trois Fontaines. At the next three-way junction, keep left and continue along Rue de Haslach. At Rue de Fuchberg, continue straight ahead onto the path that climbs steeply (Blue Disc markings). Climb Fuchsberg via the very pretty, straight path between the fruit trees. Carry on straight ahead and, when you reach the tarmac, turn left until you reach a multi-way junction at the top of the climb.
(13) Turn onto the track on the right (Blue Saltire), pass a beautiful hunters’ lodge on your left and reach a three-way junction.
(14) Turn left and, at the multi-way junction (elevation 407), take the second left and you’ll soon reach the next fork.
(15) Turn left (Red Cross signpost) and follow this small descending path which turns into a track. At the tarmac road, turn right and discover a superb sequoia over 40 metres tall, dating from before 1900, in the square. Pass in front of the Relais du Geisweg and arrive at the car park.
(16) Take the path on the right (marked with a Blue Saltire) and stay on the main track which descends to Westhoffen. “This is the highlight of the walk: a tree-lined path, a bucolic clearing, superb views, and all on a gentle descent.” At the Foyer du Bruderbach, continue along the tarmac and turn left at the next junction. Follow Rue du Bruderbach, then turn right onto Rue du Geisweg and join Rue des Rabbins Guggenheim.
(17) Turn right onto it, continue along Rue Léon Blum and follow it to the end. “Note the superb villas surrounded by gardens full of flowers and trees.”
(18) Turn left and continue straight on until you come to a beautifully restored religious building.
Leave it on your right and head up the D75, past Place du Docteur Nessman, to reach the car park at the foot of the church (S/E).
