A lovely walk in the hills above Montrigaud and Miribel with beautiful views of the Alps, the Vercors, the Roman-Valentinoise plain and the Ardèche mountains.

Description of the walk

Park near the water tower or in the hamlet of Le Bourg in Montrigaud.

(S/E) From the exit of the hamlet of Le Bourg on the D265, follow the D-road towards Saint-Christophe until you reach the junction with the Chemin de Hurl'vent.

(1) Turn left onto this path leading to the Hurl'vent horse riding centre. Take the path that branches off to the left of the storage skip. Follow the path down to the tarmac road. Continue to the right along the road for about a hundred metres.

(2) Follow the path that climbs to the right, enter the woods and continue to the next junction.

(3) Take the path on the left and follow it for about 1 km. You will come to a crossroads (Barbanteine hiking signpost – 502 m).

(4) Take the path on the left that descends towards the south-east. Just before reaching a path leading left to a house, find the path branching off to the right into the woods and follow it to a clearing at a crossroads.

(5) Turn left and continue due south along the path until you reach the tarmac road (farm on the left) in the Deveau district.

(6) Ignore Impasse Bellevue on the right and continue along this small road, Chemin Deveau, until you reach the junction with the D513 road to Saint-Bonnet de Valclérieux.

(7) Cross the road and head straight on along a grassy track to the village of Miribel. Before the town hall, notethe Church of Saint-Sever and the Vierge des Collines. Continue straight on until you reach the Fork in the road just after leaving the village.

(8) At the fork in the road on the D513, take the road on the left towards La Charrière, pass Cadet, and continue straight on to the hamlet.

(9) In the hamlet, turn right onto the road that climbs in a wide right-hand bend. Leave the tarmac and continue along the Chemin de la Tour et des Vignes. Pass the La Tour housing estate. At the crossroads, continue straight on, heading north, along the Chemin du Glanon. After passing through some woodland, you will reach the D513.

(10) Walk along the left-hand side of the D513, ignoring the turnings to the right or left, until you reach a crossroads with several paths. Turn right onto the road (Impasse de Chambaran) and follow it for just over 100 m.

(11) At the Fork in the road, take the path leading off to the right towards the north-east. Continue along this path. Keep heading north-east until you reach a right-hand bend and arrive at the crossroads (Philigon hiking signpost).

(12) Follow the main path on the left heading north-east and return to the Barbanteine signpost junction you passed on the way out.

(4) Turn left. After about a hundred metres, the path turns right. Continue along this path, which crosses a clearing and then gradually descends towards the River Limone. You will then reach the D265.

(13) Follow the road to the left, crossing the bridge. Follow the Chaffaure path (signposted) and, as you come out of the bend, turn immediately right onto the path heading north-east along the Limone to the junction near the bridge over the Limone at a place called Chaffaure.

(14) Turn right and cross the stone bridge, then head back up to the tarmac road. Continue straight up the hill until you reach the small path halfway up the slope, which branches off to the left. Take this path and continue straight on until you reach the main road. Turn right to enter the hamlet of Le Bourg and return to the starting point (S/E).

Just a quick note regarding points 11 and 12 at the Philigon sign. You need to head towards
Combe de Barbanteine. That’s clearer.

A pleasant short walk, best done in summer as there’s plenty of woodland cover… but definitely not after rain: the paths get flooded

A lovely walk – make sure you follow the instructions carefully and don’t rely solely on the signposts, as this can lead to
misleading. There is little space to park at the water tower; if there are several cars, it is better to set off from the village.

The route and the area are excellent, but as with many other walks, the most difficult part is the starting point, which is always rather vague (for this route, the water tower – you have to manage to spot it, whereas right next to it, I think it would have been simpler to use the sign for the village hamlet, which is perfectly visible and clearly marked).
