On the heights of Cassagnas

A short, fairly easy circular route that takes you up to the heights of the village via a pretty path through heathland covered with broom, heather and ferns, then gently back down through a forest of pine, oak and chestnut trees. Some beautiful viewpoints.

Description of the walk

From the N106, take the small road towards Cassagnas, then, at the entrance to the village, follow the signs to the car park located below the war memorial.

(S/E) Take the road back in the opposite direction, passing a fountain and the house "Le Pirsch", then at the fork, go up to the right. Look out for the red and white markings ofthe GR®®72, which you will follow throughout the climb to the Col du Poulio.

(1) Further on, at the temple, ignore a street on the right and continue straight ahead on the path, which quickly becomes a narrow trail winding through the moorland. There may be sheep, but we did not see any sheepdogs.

Higher up, continue through the undergrowth as you enter the Bougès State Forest. You will come to an old minor road.

(2) Follow it to the right until you reach an intersection with a track at Col du Poulio.

(3) A few metres before reaching the track, take the unmarked path on the right that goes uphill.
You can also follow the track on the right, marked in yellow, which also leads to the Col de la Planette, and this allows you to climb less.
The path then descends to join the Col de la Planette at a small road.

(4) Two paths branch off in front of you. Follow the one on the far right for a short round trip to the top of this small hill, which offers a beautiful view.

(5) Turn around.

(4) Back on the small road, follow it to the left to descend back into the village.

(1) At the temple, turn left again to return to the car park (S/E).

Fairly easy hike, but hiking boots are necessary on theGR®® section: the trail is safe but narrow and rocky.

An easy hike. Crossing the moors on a small path in full sun, which climbs steadily but regularly, is very pleasant. Then, arriving at the chestnut grove allows us to cool off in the shade. Return via the uninteresting road. Take a right after point 3 to avoid it, but I didn't try this as I realised too late that the initial route was only along the road. However, it is 7 km long but there are only 4 red markers on the Visorando map.

The route took less than two hours, including breaks and without rushing.
The first 2 kilometres were in a very dry and somewhat dreary setting (burnt area).
It became more pleasant once we reached the forest.
An easy hike that would be best enjoyed in bright sunshine.

Hello,
A beautiful hike with no difficulties. It takes closer to 2.5 hours at a normal pace with a few breaks.
I didn't meet anyone else on a sunny Sunday afternoon.
Very nice view at point no. 5.
Return via the road from point 4 to the end (not very long).

A short route but with a steep climb that leads to a beautiful panorama that is not to be missed. Please note that a signpost has been damaged and put back in the wrong direction at the first pass. Return via the road, which is not particularly interesting.
