Description of the walk

Start: Church of Saint-Germain-de-Calberte.

(S/E) Turn your back on the church entrance and head straight on. Follow theGR® 70 (Chemin de Stevenson), pass the post office and continue on theGR® 70.

(1) Leave the D984 and turn right towards Les Faysses. Continue for about 250 m until you reach a fork.

(2) Leave theGR® 70 and turn right towards Le Rouvier, climbing the hairpin bends through the forest. Join a path, follow it to the right and pass Le Rouvier.

(3) Continue straight on along the DFCI track for about 1,400 m until you reach a fork in the tracks with a sharp bend.

(4) Continue left along the DFCI track until you finally reach a multi-way junction, near the La Can water reservoir.

(5) Continue along the firebreak path, turning left as you climb, and follow it to the Rocs de Galta.

(6) Climb up onto the rocks and admire the view, then continue along the path which passes by a prehistoric burial site. Much further on, you’ll reach a junction with a track.

(7) Take a path on the right to rejoin theGR® 70, which you should follow to the finish. Before that, you’ll reach the multi-way junction you passed on the way out.

(5) Continue straight ahead and walk alongside the Serre de la Can Holiday Village.

(8) Continue on theGR®70to the village and the church of Saint-Germain-de-Calberte (S/E).

Superb landscapes, no particular difficulties. The start is on a rather unattractive firebreak track, but the rest of the route is well worth the sacrifice. The first part lacks signage, but then you come across yellow and/or white and green markings which make the hike easier. Highly recommended.

A colourful hike in the hills of the Cévennes, bathed in sunshine on an autumn day.
Well-marked trail.

The hike details need to be reviewed:
- the total distance is correct
- the total elevation gain is no more than 500 m, rather than the 1,604 m stated
- the walking time (including a picnic) is no more than 4 hours
Otherwise, the view from the Rocs de Galta is magnificent – pure Cévennes!

I did this hike in the spring, and it was already quite warm, but as the route is mostly shaded, that wasn’t a problem. Halfway through, I realised that the route I was following was the PR route, but in the opposite direction, according to other hikers. In my opinion, the section through the rocks is a bit poorly signposted. You also follow a section of the Stevenson Trail. The hike is listed as taking a fairly long 7 hours and 25 minutes, but I completed it much more quickly; you should allow a good three and a half hours, especially if you want to climb the rocks to admire the magnificent view and have a short picnic break. I also took two short detours: the first to see the standing stone before starting the return journey (it’s very close by, so it would be a shame not to go there), and the second to top up my water supplies at the Le Serre de la Can holiday village. In any case, I thoroughly enjoyed this hike.

It’s a bit rough at -2°C with a northerly wind, but it must be brilliant in summer
