On the heights of Braine-le-Château

A beautiful little hike, mainly on trails interspersed with a few short stretches on quiet roads, offering beautiful panoramic views and some magnificent trees. You may be lucky enough to spot a deer or two, a fox or a badger as you pass through one of the shady corners of the walk. Take the time to soak up the serenity of the undergrowth and stop at the foot of the remarkable trees.

Description of the walk

Parking Rue de Mont-Saint-Pont, in the parallel section of the same name, in a slight right-hand bend.

(S/E) After the last house (no. 149), a path climbs quite steeply into the woods on your right, the Sentier du Coucou. Follow it until you reach a street, which you cross. Continue along the path opposite, slightly to the right, until you reach Avenue du Beau Séjour.

(1) Turn left and take the pavement opposite. It climbs steeply. Leave the road that branches off to the left and, shortly afterwards, a small staircase descends to the left.

(2) This is where the Sentier de l'Abbaye trail begins. Follow it downhill until you reach the edge of the woods.

(3) Just at the edge of the woods, before the road, take the Sentier du Grippet on the right. You are now on the GRP®127, Tour du Brabant wallon. It climbs steeply and leads you to Rue des Radoux. Follow it to the right until you reach a path on the left, just before a crossroads.

(4) The entrance is not very inviting, but the GRP® markings are clearly visible. This path, the Sentier du Château de Fer, follows the back of a riding arena, where some fence posts lean over the path but do not block it. You will reach the Sentier à Bouclettes. Follow it to the left, still on the GRP® 127. Shortly after the Ruisseau des Fonds, it joins the Rue aux Escarbilles.

(5) Turn left and, after about twenty metres, take the Sentier à Scrabouille path, which climbs to the right. This leads you to a beautiful viewpoint over Braine-le-Château. You can choose between various routes, but they all lead to Rue Sentier Sainte-Anne. Walk down this street until you reach a T-junction. You are now on Rue aux Escarbilles. Turn right, then left. Walk downhill for about ten metres until you reach Sentier des Fiefs on your right.

(6) Walk to the entrance gate of a house. Just after the hedge on your right, the path begins. Ignore the two paths starting on the right and continue straight ahead. The path curves slightly to the left, then turns right. A little further on, take the time to admire the old oak tree on your right and the enormous old willow tree. The path ends at a tarmac road that joins Rue Landuyt, which you follow downhill to the left until you reach Rue de Hal (N28). Turn left and stay on the central reservation. Twenty metres further on, on your left, a path begins.

(7) Take it; this is the Sentier des Prés del Cour, which follows the Hain. It joins Rue de Mont-Saint-Pont. There is a pedestrian crossing on your left. Cross and turn right. Ten metres further on, turn left onto Rue Charles Herman, which climbs up to the Ravel L115.

(8) Follow it to the left. You will cross a first road, Rue Poulet or Drève Deschamps. At the next junction, turn left onto Chemin Vert, which passes over the Hain and joins Rue de Mont-Saint-Pont. Turn left, then immediately right to return to your parking spot (S/E).

Thank you, McDuffe, for this lovely sharing and wonderful discovery of other walks. Many of them are included, along with photos and all the useful details, in my book "Walking and Cycling in Braine-l'Alleud".

A super varied walk, starting in the hills of Wauthier-Braine and ending on flatter ground (not quite as pretty but still nice) on the Ravel path that runs alongside the N28. I had no idea Wauthier-Braine was so pretty.
The description provided by the author (whose walks I am currently testing – with great pleasure – hehe) is entirely accurate (particularly the mention of several beautiful old trees). See also the photos, which illustrate the landscapes well. Obviously, in winter it's a little different and you can hear the E19 motorway and the N28 quite loudly as the trees are bare (and in any case, good luck finding a place in Walloon Brabant where you can't hear any roads), but I'll come back to do it in other seasons.
Duration: with my wife, who doesn't walk quickly, it took us 1 hour 55 minutes, including a 10-minute break.
The walk is relatively easy, but the first 4 kilometres are anything but flat, so walking sticks may be useful (depending on the age and stamina of the walker).
Thank you, Patrick!
