Spessart Trail “Sunny Slopes of Lohrhaupten”

Sunbeams illuminate the forest-surrounded valley of Lohrhaupten, tickling the walker’s nose and giving them a cosy, warm feeling – always walking towards the sun, or, walking anti-clockwise with its glow at your back, is the motto of the ‘Fine Weather Trail’, which offers that very special mountain feeling.

Description of the walk

From the old village centre of Lohrhaupten, the path first leads to the spur of the Kirchenschlag. There, in the elevated, formerly fortified churchyard, stand the old village church and its medieval tower. The route then runs parallel to the Lohrbach for a short stretch. After the Gelnhäuser Valley, the path climbs up to the Widdehuh, where there is a first spot to rest on the summit.

The path continues across fields and meadows on the wooded slopes, alternating between soft natural paths and grassy tracks. South of the Gosseberg, the route passes birch groves on its way up to the summit, where sweeping views open out from the heights. The route then leads for a short stretch through the woods down into the Engetal valley.

Below the wooded slopes, the path continues through open fields, partly flanked by trees and well-maintained hedgerows, towards the Weicherstaler Höhe and Querberg. One section runs across open farmland before the route rejoins the edge of the dense Dohrhaupten municipal woodland. After the Kreuzeltal, the path curves around the wooded summit of the Böschel, takes a circular route through the Gemündener Tal and continues to the wildlife park on the slopes of the Mühlberg.

On the descent from the Mühlberg, a sweeping view of the narrow gorge of the Lohrbach opens up once more, before the circular route leads back to Lohrhaupten and the starting point.
