Under the Roche du Tougne

This is a beautiful summer hike where you can encounter flora and ibex... if you're lucky.
However, the first sign indicating Plan du Pré, a dead end, leaves you wondering whether it is possible to complete the route. This is not the case, because although the trail ends above Plan du Pré, you will find another one after crossing several streams, including the Tougne. All you have to do is descend and cross the Doron de Champagny on a footbridge.

Description of the walk

Park in the Laisonnay d'en bas car park, at the end of the road open to public traffic.

(S/E) Head to the Refuge du Laisonnay and the dyke, which was reinforced two or three years ago following heavy rainfall that severely damaged the area.

(1) From the refuge, continue straight ahead, crossing the Doron de Champagny via the footbridge that appears after reaching the top of the dyke.
Do not be put off by the "dead end" sign. Continue along the path that leads to Plan du Pré. Once you have passed Plan du Pré, the path becomes steeper and narrower.

(2) This point marks the start of the old path (not visible) that led to the summit of La Sauvire (2,696 m) just above you. It is a simple reminder of a time that younger people cannot remember.
Cross the Darbesset stream, the first significant stream to cross on this hike. As always, look for the easiest, least risky crossing point.
Continue along the trail and then off-trail, crossing several streams or branches of streams without trying to gain altitude. Stay below 2300m in a south-easterly direction that curves eastwards, in an open area. Your landmark is the path that can be seen from a distance and which begins after passing the Tougne stream. Don't forget to look up to enjoy the views above you (glaciers, peaks and needles) and on the other side of the valley (including the summit of Bellecôte and, below, between the valley floor and the summit of Bellecôte, the Refuge de Plaisance).

(3) Continue along the path that follows a contour line. Pass a memorial stone in memory of someone who died in an accident in the mountains. Begin the descent through vegetation that becomes denser, barely allowing you to see the path at times.

(4) You crossed the Doron de Champagny at the start of the hike to reach the left bank. Now, cross the footbridge to return to the right bank. At Le Grand Chalet, join the road that leads to the Refuge de la Glière.

(5) Continue along the road until you reach the next signpost.

(6) At the sign, take the path on the left below the road towards Laisonnay.

(7) When you return to the road, keep left for a few metres.
Leave the road and take a path that cuts across several bends. Alternatively, you can continue along the road. Either way, continue along the road, with the option of cutting across two more bends.
At the refuge, leave the road and turn left for a stop at the Refuge du Laisonnay.

(1) Take the route you took at the start of the hike to return to the Laisonnay d'en bas car park (S/E).

Notes

Be sure to wear high-top shoes, as there is a risk of getting your feet wet when crossing streams.
Given the numerous streams fed by the melting glaciers above you, there will be no shortage of water.

As mentioned, this route proved to be difficult.
There were a few potentially dangerous sections, but fortunately it is not a period of heavy snowmelt.
There were no markings, so the GPS proved useful and even essential, especially as the paths were invisible for part of the hike.
The weather was beautiful and the scenery magnificent.

Part of the hike was completed at the end of June. When we reached the first stream, the Darbesset, the volume of the torrent prevented us from crossing.
The passage indicated by the GPX track is in a rather tricky mini-ravine. We walked up the stream for about twenty minutes, but even after passing this mini-ravine, you have to get your shoes wet to cross over the crumbly and slippery rocks.
So we changed our route to go and admire a herd of ibex a little higher up, then turned back.

For experienced hikers only.
Unmarked trail with several risky river crossings, with strong currents, requiring you to step into the water on slippery rocks.
After crossing the first rivers, there is no real path. We got lost and found ourselves walking in places where even chamois would not go... In addition, some ascents and descents are difficult due to the very invasive vegetation at this time of year.
Admittedly, the landscapes, fauna (chamois, marmots) and flora are magnificent, but the area is full of marked trails that are just as beautiful and much safer.

Brilliant! Magnificent landscapes, flowers galore, glaciers and peaks all around you. Marmots are also present. At this time of year, there were two large snowfields to cross, but this was not difficult as long as you were careful, and torrents with sometimes strong currents due to late snowmelt. With two children aged 8 and 10, I preferred to rope them up twice for safety (a very personal choice), even though they have been hiking with us since the age of 4. Allow an extra hour with young children.
We only met one other person: a guide whose job was to count the chamois on the opposite slope.
This hike is a must!

A very beautiful hike, but be careful of the flow of the torrents at the beginning of the season. For some, it is necessary to deviate from the original path to cross them.

A sublime hike!
The route is not very popular, but it should be. Very wild setting. Balcony route.
However, it is best to avoid doing it in rainy weather as crossing the streams can be tricky. The route is also not suitable for young children or people who are prone to vertigo.
Thank you very much for this route, which deserves 5 stars!
