Sommet du Pieu or Le Bémont

One of the most beautiful viewpoints over Grenoble, but you have to work for it – the climb is steep! Definitely avoid this route after or during rain. Walking poles are highly recommended. The difficulty of this hike is concentrated in the 300 m of elevation gain before the summit, where the slope through the undergrowth is very steep, on soft, slippery ground with only faint tracks in places. The descent is then very gradual and pleasant, which is why it’s worth taking the route in this direction.

Description of the walk

Start at the southernmost end of the village of Saint-Paul-de-Varces. Park near the Pont du Batou bridge spanning the Torrent du Lavanchon. A “Parking” sign points you towards two parking spaces in the woods, 200 m past the bridge.

(S/E) Follow the track to the first hairpin bend on the right.

(1) Leave the track and take a path that winds steeply upwards along the edge of the Ruisseau de la Lampe, then crosses it to lead to the ridges of the Montagne d’Uriol. A stunning view of the jagged northern slopes of Brise-Tourte, below the summit of Le Pieu.

(2) Turn right: the steep climb begins now, covering 300 m of elevation gain. The track, though narrow, is clearly visible. After a bend to the right, it runs close to the Brise-Tourte ravines. After the 1017 m altitude, the slope becomes steeper until you reach the summit of the ridge.

(3) For the intrepid, a rocky outcrop to the north (on the right) leads quickly to a narrow, vertiginous viewpoint overlooking the Rochers de Brise-Tourte. Continue southwards along a path that becomes rocky again and fades slightly. Proceed until you reach the foot of the summit of Le Pieu and carefully skirt around it to the left, without attempting to climb it directly. The path leads safely, after a final ascent, to the purple summit cross of Le Pieu.

(4) "Every day is a good day". A guestbook is available for visitors to share their impressions. On 25/02/2024, it was completely full; please could future hikers bring a new one. The view is breathtaking, taking in the whole Grenoble basin to the north, Roc Cornafion and the ridges of Gerbier to the west, and the entire Belledonne range to the east!

For the descent, follow the southern ridge, which remains wooded, along a good path. This is temporarily interrupted at a steep clearing (alt. 920 m).

(5) Keep your eyes peeled for a new path that continues due south for 250 m, veers slightly west (alt. 865 m) and quickly joins a marked path descending to the right, towards the meadows and the Échaillon farm.

(6) At the farm, despite the gate marked ‘Private property’, the local path does indeed pass through the grounds; there is no problem using it. Follow the track which climbs northwards at the bottom of the valley.

(7) Pass by Pierre Grosse and continue straight on to the Pont du Batou and the car park (S/E).

Hello,
hike to the summit of Le Pieu completed on 17 August 2025.
Did not encounter anyone else on the trail.
The end of the climb is very difficult, with the last 300 metres of elevation gain very steep slope, very slippery earthy ground (although perfectly dry, to be avoided at all costs when it has rained), we lost the markings (green circles) shortly before reaching the summit, despite spending over an hour looking for them. The path leading to the summit is very difficult to see, and the summit is hidden by vegetation. Without the help of a fellow traveller who had an app on their mobile phone showing our position and the position of the summit, we would have missed the summit without seeing it.
Be sure to follow the directions for the walk, otherwise the descent is a miracle!
There are two vertiginous passages (on the way up), so avoid this walk if you're afraid of heights!
The entire route is in the forest, shaded and cool, a real treat!
There are magnificent views along the route and a splendid panorama at the summit.
The descent passes through private property with threatening hunting signs, so proceed at your own risk until hunting is prohibited.
Apart from that, it's a splendid walk that I have no regrets about doing

Emilie had warned us, and having returned from this hike—which offers spectacular views—we can confirm that you really must avoid going up when the ground is wet. Otherwise, it’s a very pleasant hike with steep, even very steep, slopes.
We had a minor issue between points 4 and 5 where we were approached by hunters reminding us that we were on private property. We had indeed seen ‘Private Property’ signs. What exactly is the situation? The best solution is to avoid this hike during the hunting season, as in spring or summer the ground won’t be slippery and there won’t be any hunters.
Thank you for this lovely hike.

A gruelling climb, hard to spot but manageable with the app; be careful not to miss the final section of the path that leads up to the marker.

The view from the top is magnificent

A decent hike, best done in dry weather.

The mud slows you down a lot and it’s slippery in quite a few places.
Which means you expend a lot of energy for very little reward...

It must be more enjoyable in summer or early autumn.

It’s a lovely walk just outside Grenoble. Be sure to follow the recommended route. I wasn’t lucky with the weather; the view from the top of Le Pieu was limited, so I’ll have to do it again.
