Gallo-Roman site at Les Cars and the surrounding area

As well as the beautiful Gallo-Roman site of Les Cars, this walk through a varied landscape of moorland and woodland takes in the small built heritage of the hamlets (crosses, wells, bridges) and the beautiful thatched cottage village of Variégas.

Description of the walk

On the D979, at Pérols-sur-Vézère, turn onto the access road to the village and park immediately in the car park at the side of the road, opposite the cemetery.
Please note! This walk is not signposted as such.

(S/E) Cross the D979 (caution! busy road, no specific speed limit) and take the small road opposite. Immediately pass to the left of a beautiful openwork cross (15th century).

(1) At the first houses in La Bussière, follow the path on the right and the orange squirrel markings until you see a sign indicating otherwise (on a wooden post or stenciled on trees). At the intersection with a road, follow the grassy path opposite.

(2) At the intersection by a small menhir, keep left. Further on, ignore a path on the left. You will come to a wide stony path.

(3) Turn right, following the green markings, and further on you will find the squirrel markings again. Ignore a path on the right. At a crossroads, go straight ahead, leaving the green markings but still following the squirrel markings. The path crosses a beautiful moor. At the T-junction, turn right and you will come to a small road. The squirrel markings are no longer visible.

(4) Follow the small road to the left until you reach Pont Tort.

(5) Cross the Riovert on the Pont Tort and continue along this very quiet small road (not a single vehicle encountered). Further on, the road is lined with a beautiful beech hedge (a special feature of the old roads in the region, the "routes des hêtres"(1)).

(6) About 1 km after Pont Tord, leave the road as it begins to curve to the right and continue straight ahead on a path that offers beautiful views to the north-west. Turn right onto the first grassy path you come to, which will take you to the hamlet of Les Maisons.
When you reach a road, walk a few metres to the right, then immediately take a street on the left and note a cross embedded in a low stone wall. Also note the red and whiteGR®® markings (which you will follow, except for the return trip, until you reach your destination).

(7) Ignore all the streets on the right to reach a four-way crossroads. Go straight ahead towards Les Rioux.

(8) The road crosses a stream and arrives at the hamlet of Les Rioux.

(9) Follow theGR®®440variant to Pérols on the left. You will immediately notice some beautiful old thatched cottages before entering a beech forest. Then cross a moor and ford the Ruisseau des Cars stream. You will arrive at an intersection with a wooden sign pointing to the right towards the Gallo-Roman site of Les Cars (2).

(10) Leave theGR®® temporarily for a return trip, turning right. You will soon arrive at a car park. Cross it, turning right. You will immediately find the funerary complex (information panels). Then follow the interpretive trail down to the old villa (remarkable remains of water domestication infrastructure).

(11) Retrace your steps to return to the GR®®.

(10) Continue to the right, initially skirting a bog. After passing through beech woods and heathland, you will arrive at the hamlet of Ars, near a farm building. Turn right, then immediately left. Join the road and follow it to the left to reach the centre of the hamlet.

(12) At the first intersection, near a beautiful carved cross and an oven set back a little, turn right in front of the cross, temporarily leaving theGR®® trail, for a round trip to the Fontaine de l'Étanchou. At the end of the street, continue along the grassy path. At a fork, keep right on the path lined with low walls. You will arrive at the fountain, a semi-natural drinking trough collecting water from small springs, in the middle of a wood.

(13) Return to the cross in the centre of the hamlet.

(12) Continue on theGR®® to the right (note the group of cottages on the left just after this point). Turn onto the first path on the right, then ignore the Écureuil signpost on the left and continue straight ahead. Continue along this wide path to reach the hamlet of Variégas (3).

(14) The first houses you come to set the tone: Variégas is a hamlet consisting almost entirely of cottages, most of which are modern but built in the typical regional style. Continue along the road through the village (note the totems on the right). When you reach an oratory above a well, follow the direction indicated by a wooden sign saying "Pont à 300m" (bridge 300 metres away).

(15) Cross the Rivière d'Ars on the Pont de Variégas bridge and continue along the path. Further on, ignore a path on the left and continue straight ahead on the small road that extends the path. Pass to the left of a private pond, then arrive at the hamlet of La Bussière.

(1) Keep right to return to the outward route and reach the car park (S/E) on the other side of the D979.

Notes

Moderately difficult hike, with standard hiking equipment.

Some grassy paths, which may be a little overgrown depending on when the land is cleared. Otherwise, quiet paths and stretches of small roads.

Worth a visit

(1) Beech tree roads. In this region of Corrèze, the old roads are often lined with magnificent beech trees. The most beautiful road I know in the region, in terms of the length of the hedge, the beauty of the beech trees and the landscape, is the D919E3 between Meymac and Bugeat.

(2) Gallo-Roman site of Les Cars. The remains of a funerary complex and a villa, and an interpretive trail.

(3) Variégas. A very original hamlet, consisting of numerous thatched cottages, some recent and some renovated, with a very original architectural style compared to the more well-known thatched cottages of Normandy or Brittany-Briéronnes. The roofs adapt to the different wall heights without breaks, and the gardens are dotted with small outbuildings.

In fine weather, extend your walk with a visit to the village of Pérols, which often organises a poster festival, with posters pinned to the walls of the village houses.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

A lovely walk with magnificent colourful autumn landscapes around the peat bogs.
Unfortunately, there is a bit too much road, but above all, the hike is not marked. The little squirrels drawn on the trees, supposed to show us the way, can be counted on the fingers of one hand. We got lost several times, with our eyes glued to our phones the whole time, and ended up walking 19 km instead of 17.

I have modified the route to park at Peyrols (church car park) which is less risky than at the side of the road and by improving the route the distance remains the same (remains of the RACs ...)

otherwise deplorable ride 40% BITUME, 40% farm road and logging 20% pleasant roads 0% trail
interesting walk on bessière, ars, vestiges of CAR the other portion is useless
the best thing to do is to hop around by car
In addition, the village of thatched cottages in Variégas is a shambles: modern cement houses with thatched roofs.

We did this walk on a very hot day in April, it's a magnificent walk, there are a few stretches of road but they're not very busy and they're also very pleasant because they're very pretty. In the village "les maisons" we made a small detour to the mill at the very bottom of the village (not indicated on the hike) and it's a shame because it's just beautiful, a small road that passes between meadows of daffodils, it's a small corner well maintained and just beautiful. We encountered a small problem approaching the site of the Car ruins, the small stream had turned into a small river we had to improvise to be able to cross. This superb walk took between 4 and 5 hours. GPS enabled.

Very nice walk, not too complicated because the description is complete, pleasant to do because of the beautiful scenery and quite a lot of undergrowth.
The road sections are not very busy.

A lovely walk for a group of eight people. Don't hesitate to take the guided tour of the car site; free in summer, it is led by young people who are passionate about what they do. Don't look for a monument at the Etanchou fountain, it's just a watering hole for the animals. Thank you for this suggestion.

Did the short version (12 km) suggested in a guide book. Very varied walk with some nice surprises like the site of Les Cars and the village of Variéras. Lots of heather at this time of year.

hike on Friday 13 August 2021 with a group of 8 adults. The topo was perfect, just be aware that the Etanchou fountain is just a spring used as a drinking trough.

We took a guided tour of the site, which was particularly remarkable, with qualified guides. What's more, it's free during the summer - highly recommended.
Thank you for your work.

A walk in the rain that day, a wild landscape and a sublime passage at Varieras. To be done again with the sun.

Bright weather on the day of the walk, which added to the interest.
I recommend the village of Variéras for its remarkable houses, although other places are just as remarkable.
What a lovely walk!

Lovely route through peat bogs and moorland. Beautiful paths. A magnificent Carolingian bridge under the thatched village of Varieras. Beautiful buildings. Don't forget the Gallo-Roman site.
The route takes 4 hours, with a few breaks.
