Sentiers des Roches - Frankenthal

Mythical and probably one of the most beautiful hikes in the Vosges Mountains! Perched above the Munster Valley with breathtaking natural views. Part of the loop is carved into the rock face and equipped with ladders and handrails. Sure-footedness, good hiking boots and walking sticks are required. This is a shorter version than the many others that exist, designed to take advantage of the shade provided by the vegetation and, on very hot days, avoid the exposed climb up the Col de Falimont. Another special feature is that it includes the "sentier des roches" (rock trail) on the way up.

Description of the walk

Parking at the top of the Col de la Schlucht, Place du Grand Tétras.

(S/E) With your back to the Tourist Office, follow the red rectangle trail towards the south-west.

(1) Turn left to go around the Notre-Dame-des-Chaumes chapel at the top. Keep following the red rectangle markings, pass through a turnstile and cross the road which, on the left, leads to the Trois Fours farmhouse inn and the refuge chalet of the same name.

(2) Follow the blue triangle markings to the left, taking a path that enters the forest. Reach the viewpoint over Frankenthal.

(3) Continue down the winding path until you reach a fork.

(4) Descend to the right on the Sentier de la Bloy, marked with a blue rectangle, and come out onto a forest path.

(5) Leave the blue rectangle markings by crossing the forest road and take the path opposite marked with a yellow disc. Both paths lead to Frankenthal and you will take this one on the way back. You will soon reach a fork.

(6) Follow the yellow disc markings uphill to the right, cross the Ruisseau de la Fecht and arrive at a fork (turnstile).

(7) Turn left and head towards the Marcairie du Frankenthal.

(8) After a possible stop, retrace your steps.

(7) Continue straight ahead on the forest path (GR® 531 - Blue Rectangle) until you reach the junction you crossed on the way there.

(5) Take the path on the left in the opposite direction to the outward journey.

(4) Continue straight ahead, following the blue rectangle markings for the GR®531. You will reach Krappenfels, which marks the start of the Roches trail: take particular care on this section. Continue to the junction with the trail marked with a yellow cross.

(10) Continue left and return directly to the car park where you started (S/E).

A beautiful, rather technical trail!
Some slippery spots due to soil brought onto the rocks by tree cutting and recent rains.

Very good hike but lots of people! Better to do it in September when it's less crowded.

A magnificent hike in dry, sunny weather. Done at the end of August, so there were few people on the trail, unlike in previous weeks. The scenery is breathtaking, some sections are technical and require sure footing, especially as the path is sometimes vertiginous.
We stopped at the mountain inn, which is only accessible on foot, as indicated on the circuit and at the bottom of the Folimont Pass. Very friendly, delicious food, busy but not too crowded.
Please note: no credit cards accepted.
Return via the rocky path in the direction of the ascent.

Superb trail.
My son is afraid of heights and was able to do it without any problems.
Make sure you wear good shoes.
It does get busy on this trail, but it's definitely worth it.
Thanks to the Vosges club for the signposting :-)
