Departure from the car park near the waste collection centre located on the D130 between Échenans-sous-Mont-Vaudois and Brévilliers.
(S/E) At the car park, head towards the waste collection centre following the Chemin du Mont Vaudois, marked by a yellow rectangle. It serves as a link between theGR®5andGR®59and is also the Way of St James.
Walk past the waste collection centre, passing a path on your left and then another on your right.
(1) Turn right at this crossroads, following the blue triangle markings, and do not continue on the yellow rectangle.
The blue triangle markings will take you to (8).
(2) Turn right and continue climbing. Cross the wide forest road and continue straight ahead, following the blue triangle markings. Look out for the first casemates of the fortifications. You will see several before arriving at the fort.
The Friends of Fort du Mont Vaudois have put up several very interesting information panels. When you reach a casemate, turn right and then left. The blue triangle markings are very clear. Continue along the path to reach Fort du Mont Vaudois. Go to the entrance to admire the architecture.
(3) Retrace your steps and, just before the buildings, look for the path that branches off to the right. Be careful, you have to look very closely to see the blue triangle markings.
The path takes a small detour and passes close to casemates and battery emplacements. Several signs provide detailed explanations of these military structures.
Further on, the path joins the Chemin du Fort. Continue to the right.
(4) At the end of the bend, turn right onto the path. Shortly afterwards, several signs indicate that you are following the route of the inclined plane used to build the fort. A little further on, admire the view of Luze.
After a long left-hand bend, the path leads to Chemin du Fort.
(5) Follow it to the right and you will come to a crossroads.
(6) Turn left onto Chemin du Roublot. Admire the beautiful views of Héricourt.
Continuing straight ahead, you will arrive at the waste collection centre on Route de Luze, which can serve as another starting point for this hike.
(7) Turn left onto Chemin du Télégraphe (see sign), then left onto Chemin du Sacy, also marked by a sign. Keep to the right a hundred metres further on.
(8) At this crossroads, the signposting changes. Turn left onto the path marked with a yellow rectangle, which connects theGR®5andGR®59. Follow it, leaving numerous paths on your left and right. It is very well signposted.
(1) Continue straight ahead to follow the outward route in the opposite direction and return to the starting point (S/E).
pleasant stroll
Quite a nice route. It's a shame that at this time of year there are still lots of leaves on the trees, so there aren't many views on the right.
