Elche Palm Grove Trail

A walk accessible to all, between the city and the palm grove. Ideal for discovering Elche and its horticultural heritage (listed by UNESCO). This route follows the PR®-CV 439, the official path of the Valencian Community, but with a different starting point for accessibility and easier parking.

Description of the walk

The starting point is the university car park opposite the Hort de la Torre.

(S/E) If you are doing this route at the weekend, you can go through the park, otherwise go around it to reach Camino del Panta, which is not a "Camino" but a road! It is quite busy, so take care. Follow it for a few metres and then turn left through the palm grove. Pass a vocational training centre and you will immediately come to a viewpoint.

(1) Cross the park heading south, with the Vinalopo River below on your right and the new town of Elche opposite. Cross thefirst bridge (Puente del Ferrocarril).

(2) Turn left into the Municipal Park. This is a beautiful park featuring a statue of Ernesto Martinez Riviera, the Real mill (an old 18th-century mill), a bandstand and a dovecote. On leaving, you will pass the tourist office.

(3) Immediately turn right to walk alongside the Archaeological Museum and the Palacio de Altamira. Immediately afterwards, head down towards the Vinalopo River. Pass under the Puente de Altamira bridge, then under two other bridges in succession, and cross the river via a small footbridge. Walk along the right bank.

(4) Pass under the Pont de Sainte-Thérèse, the oldest bridge in the city, then cross the river again via a small footbridge. Take the street on the right as if you were going back down towards the river, but stay on the road that goes uphill. This is the only uphill section of the entire hike! Take the path on the right to cross the Hort de la Beleta, which leads to a main road, an extension of the Pont de la Generalitat, a large suspension bridge. Walk through the town along the Hort de Travaló Baix, then the Hort del Cebo until you reach the corner of the Torre de Ressemblanc.

(5) Start the climb by turning left. This part is a little more monotonous, but there are some interesting sights along the way, including the "Tomba del mur". Just on the other side of the roundabout, turn left, then cross the parks on the right, heading north. You will arrive at the Place des Congrès.

(6) Turn right onto Carrer Curtidors towards Hort del Clot; turn left at the fork and walk past the "Pipa Real", a vertical palm tree!

(7) If the park is open (Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.), cross it to pass in front of "la casa de l'hort des puntos",the oldest traditional house in the city. Otherwise, go around it to the south (Cami de l'Almassera), then to the east (Cami de Beniarda) until you reach the police headquarters.

(8) Walk along Carrer Xop Illicita (police station on the right), then follow a path on the left to cross Hort del Gat. This will take you to Cami del Gat. Follow it to the right for 50 metres before turning left again to cross Hort de la Villa Carmen park. You will come out on Avenue Joan Carles I.

(9) Cross over and continue straight ahead to reach Avenue de Candalix. Follow it to the left and, at Hort de l'Ullets park, take Carrer Nuestra Senora de la Cabea on the right to go up to the bus station.

(10) At the roundabout, turn right onto Alcade Vicente Quiles, then take the first left to return to the university car park (S/E).

Notes

6 is the starting point of the official PR®-CV 439 route. However, for practical reasons of ease of parking, this route suggests starting from the university car park, beginning at Hort de la Torre.

This makes the Place du Congrès (6) the perfect place to stop for a bite to eat or a drink halfway through your walk, as there are plenty of restaurants and bars around the square, which is located in the heart of the historic city centre.

The suggested starting point (S) is also close to the bus station (10) for those arriving by bus from Alicante.

You can follow the official markings (yellow and white), although these can sometimes be difficult to see among so many palm trees!

Worth a visit

If you have time, the city is full of beautiful and historic places to visit:

  • Archaeological Museum
  • Not far away is the Basilica of Santa Maria. From its bell tower, you can enjoy one of the most beautiful panoramic views of the city.
  • Palmeraie Museum and San Plácido Orchard. Located in a 19th-century house. Learn about the origins and history of palm groves.
  • Opposite the Palm Grove Museum: the Hort del Cura. A garden with 300-year-old palm trees and other magnificent trees and cacti. Replica of the Lady of Elche.
  • Alcudia Archaeological Park and Museum, south of the city. Original settlement of the city of Ilice. Site where the Lady of Elche was discovered.
