The Ponds Trail from Villegaudin

Set off to explore the church of Villegaudin, a testament to the village’s past, walk near the Étang de Villegaudin, a haven of biodiversity, and finish at the Moulin de Gabrot, a former private mill nestled on the banks of the Cosne. A walk rich in nature and local heritage!

Description of the walk

The start of this circular route is at the car park of Villegaudin Town Hall.

(S/E) Once you reach the start sign, take the road on the left and continue straight on for 600 m to reach the Étang de Villegaudin.

(1) Take the road going uphill to the left and continue straight on for 1.5 km.

(2) At La Seignotte, turn left onto the road. A few metres further on, you’ll come to a path. Continue straight on for 800 m until you reach Le Courtil Picot.

(3) Take the road on the left and continue straight on for 1 km. Along the way, you’ll pass the old mill and the Étang de Gabrot.

(4) At the crossroads after the forest, take the path on the left to cross the forest and reach a road 800 m further on. Continue to the junction.

(5) Take the road on the left and continue straight on for 350 m to return to the starting point (S/E).

Signposting: follow the signs (VIL1) and the yellow markings ( walkingand hikingtrail).

Safety instructions: be well equipped (rucksack,first-aid kit, suitable clothing, good footwear, etc.). Bring a bottle of water and protect yourself from the sun. Take a mobile phone with you. Do not leave any litter in the countryside. Take care when crossing roads. Do not stray from the marked trails. Keep clear of forestry work. Respect crops, livestock, private property and current regulations. Take care during the hunting season (September to February).

Worth a visit

During this walk, you will pass by the church of Villegaudin with its Bresse-style architecture; the old Gabrot mill, a living testament to this Bresse heritage; and the Étang de Villegaudin, which, connected to other ponds by waterways, eventually flows into the Saône.
