Description of the walk

Park in Middleton in Teesdale. This track starts from roadside parking in front of the old Victorian School which was later an outdoor centre and which is now a small business. If you can't park here then there is more parking back up the hill in the village. Wherever you park, walk down to the bridge over the River Tees.

(S/E) From the parking, walk to the bridge over the River Tees and turn left onto the Teesdale Way path. Now walk with the river on your right. You will pass a small waterworks building next to a weir, past a sewage works, through a section where the path is separated from the river by a small stone/concrete wall, past a caravan site and into a wood where the path ascends and descends via wooden steps in places. After the wood the slope on the left starts to open up, where the path splits take the right hand path near the river. You will see a small crag up and right (view point on OS map). You will arrive at a gate where the path splits. The right hand track take you to a bridge over the river, you need to take the left hand path.

(1) Take the left hand path which heads uphill and joins a farm track and then the road after Egglesburn Farm. (Marker post) Cross the road and take the narrow road heading North-East, past a chapel and up to small stone building on the right and information board. This is Saddle House.

(2) Take the track on the right just after Saddle House and head down to cross the Eggleston Burn via a bridge. Continue on the track and cross the Blackton Beck by stepping stones (or wading if it is deep. Currently the bridge here is closed as it is unsafe). Continue up the track to a the junction with a road and entrance to a caravan site. Go straight ahead to follow a path past some houses, go through a gate and keep right to follow the more obvious path with fields (medieval cultivation terraces) below on your right, then pass Egglestone House to join a road.

(3) Follow the road and at the T junction turn right into Eggleston, take the first road on the right and walk downhill to the T junction and a gatehouse building for Eggleston Hall on the other side of the road.

(4) Cross over. The OS map shows a path into the estate. There is a notice saying that the path goes to the church gate only but the church is next to the garden centre and tea room. If you follow the road you will arrive at the tea room. (5)

(If you are unsure of this or if you want to avoid the tea room then turn left at (4) and follow the road to the next T junction, turn right and walk down hill to (6).)

(5) From the tea room take the road through the estate and past the entrance to the hall to arrive at the estate gates.

(6) Cross over, turn right and walk downhill to the bridge. Note this is narrow and there is no pavement so take care with cars. Continue along the road to a stile and signpost on the left.

(7) Cross the stile and follow the path across the field and to a breeze block wall (arrows). Follow the line of the wall and go slightly uphill to a dry stone wall. Turn right and follow this to the corner where there is a set of stone steps leading over into the next field. Now look ahead and walk diagonally towards some trees, sign post and stone stile. Cross over and turn right to follow the path, cross a stream via a wooden bridge and continue along the path between holly bushes. Emerge at a village green and turn right. Walk into Romaldkirk; the church is worth exploring. Continue through the village, past the two pubs and over the cross roads. Keep following the road (West) to an old railway signal next to the old station. Just after there is a sign of the right for the Tees Railway Path.

(8) Turn right, and ascend, then descend to join the Tees Railway Path, follow this to cross a road into Mickleton and then arrive at the carpark and information boards.

(9) Continue along the Tees Railway Path to the viaduct over the River Lune. Continue towards Lonton and look out for a concrete step/stile on the right.

(10) Cross the stile and walk past the buildings to a gap leading onto the road. Turn left and walk along the road until there is a signpost and stone stile on the right. Cross into the field and walk diagonally left to the far corner to pass into the next field. Walk diagonally to a wooden gate over a stone stile which leads into the woods. Go through the gate/stile and walk down to a track. Turn left and follow the track which leads back to the River Tees. Follow the farm track with the river on your right until you can see the sheds of the cattle market ahead and some wooden steps leading up to the bridge. Turn off the farm tack and follow the path to the steps. Take these up to the end of the bridge but take care with traffic as there is no pavement.  Now turn right and walk back to your car. (S/E)

Practical information

The tea room at Eggleston Hall is a good half way stop but check their website first https://www.egglestonhall.co.uk/cafe-gardens/ as it may be closed out of season. (It has been closed for the past year but re-opened on 16th March 2025)

If the tea room is closed then the Rose and Crown in Romaldkirk serves tea and coffee and good lunches.

The Tees Pot is a good local cafe in Middleton in Teesdale and the village has some good pubs too.

The walk is mostly on good paths and is easy to follow. Some sections can be muddy and whilst the bridge over the Blackton Beck is closed you will want waterproof boots to keep your feet dry when crossing the stream.

The walk is never to high but take waterproofs just in case, as the weather can change, particularly in autumn, winter or spring.

As this is a circular walk it can be started from Romaldkirk or Egglestone Hall if you prefer to park in these places.
