Schneeberg via Nideck

This hike will take you to a fantastic viewpoint over the steep valley where the Nideck waterfall is nestled (Hirschfels viewpoint). The rest of the hike takes you a little higher up to the Schneeberg, one of the highest peaks in the Northern Vosges, which rises to 961 metres. The return journey takes you back to the Nideck waterfall, which will provide a welcome cool respite after climbing 700 metres!

Description of the walk

Parking is available on a roadside path off the Nideck road (D218), on the left as you arrive from Oberhaslach.
There is a large car park about 300 m further on, near the Auberge de la Cascade du Nideck.

(S/E) Drive carefully up the road for about 200 m towards Oberhaslach until you reach a crossroads and the entrance to the Haslach Forest.

(1) Take a small path on your left that climbs steeply, not to be confused with the wide path that leads to the houses. The path is marked with a red triangle.

(2) Just after the Hirshfels Rock, the path splits in two. Take the one on the right, marked with a yellow triangle, and climb up to the Nideck car park and the D218.

(3) Continue left on the road and pass the Nideck forest house. Shortly after the forest house, a small steep path climbs up to your right. This is theGR®531marked with a blue rectangle, which you will need to follow for a while. It crosses a wide forest path and numerous trails several times. After a long climb, the path begins a slight descent. Stay alert for a few hundred metres so you don't miss a small, hard-to-see junction with a path marked with a red cross.

(4) The red cross marker is quite visible when you reach this crossroads. Climb left along this path, which will take you to the summit of Schneeberg.

(5) When you pass the Schneeberg Refuge, continue along the path towards the spring. About 200 metres after the spring, you will come to a fork below the summit.

(6) Continue along the path uphill and do not turn right towards Wangenbourg. This path will take you to a large rock that towers over Schneeberg, known as Lottelfels.

(7) From the summit, retrace your steps a few metres and descend the small steps. The descent route follows the Red Rectangle (GR®53) trail southwards and then south-west. The descent is steeper and you will cross a forest path. Further on, theGR® meets another wide forest path and merges with a Red Triangle marked path.

(8) The descent route starts on the left of the wide path. It is a fairly steep trail that ventures into the undergrowth and returns to the Maison Forestière du Nideck.

(3) From the forest house car park, follow the path marked "Cascade, Ruines" (Waterfall, Ruins), following the red triangle markings southwards. You will come to a fork.

(9) At the fork, leave theGR®53, which branches off to the right, and keep to the left to avoid taking the path that descends. The path runs alongside Nideck. Pass a footbridge on the right, where theGR®53comes from, to reach the Nideck Waterfall.

(10) Shortly after the waterfall viewpoint, leave the red triangle markings and take a series of well-maintained stair-like switchbacks on the right that lead to the foot of the waterfall, now following the red rectangle markings ofthe GR®53.

(11) From the foot of the waterfall, theGR® trail leads you to the Auberge du Nideck.

(12) Once you arrive at the inn, follow the tarmac road to the left to reach the car park about 300 m further on (S/E).

I haven't been back there for a while, but it seems that the path has indeed been altered. Sorry about the jungle trek!

A very beautiful hike with lovely views. The only major difficulty is that from point "7" to the forest path, it is impossible to follow the non-existent markings, as there is no visible trail. You have to use the GPS tracking on the VISORANDO app to navigate through the undergrowth littered with tree trunks and other brush for a little over 1 km.

The trail has been removed and rerouted. You must retrace your steps and follow the red rectangle.

As the previous comments indicate, after point 7 there is no path for at least 1 km, with dozens of trees and branches making the hike almost impassable. We managed to slalom between the trees and branches, but I really think it's better to take another path by going back the way you came. This is also the case after points 8 and 9, but you can take a slight detour at this point.
Apart from that, the hike is quite technical and rather difficult, but very pretty. We even saw two foxes and had a drink when we arrived at the Nideck waterfall inn

Beautiful route, but after point 7, it was impossible to find the path to follow the trail. We returned to the Schneeberg refuge to join the GR 53 because fallen trees made the descent impassable. Apart from that, the Nideck waterfalls are beautiful and you can walk down them 😀.

A beautiful hike, enjoyed under very mild skies despite the cold weather.
The waterfall had a good flow. Very beautiful terrace above Wangenbourg-Engenthal.
A little snow on the trees for the last few hundred metres of the aptly named Schneeberg.
The route is fairly easy to follow. Except on the descent from Schneeberg, because the unmarked trail is no longer passable. Dozens (even hundreds) of trees have been felled to make the trail inaccessible. It is a tangle of trees deliberately felled to fall on the trail.
So we slalomed along both sides of the path for a good kilometre, using a GPS watch to guide us to the marked section of a forest path.
In addition, a sign prohibits access to the Hirschfels rock. Rare birds of prey nest there and must not be disturbed, otherwise they may abandon their young.

A pleasant walk through the forest... At this time of year, the Nideck waterfall is rather small, but the site is very well laid out for exploring.
Please note that on the descent from the summit of Schneeberg, the trail is no longer marked by the CV for about 2 km before the markings reappear a little further down.

Nothing more to add about this magnificent hike and the equally magnificent village of Wangenbourg.
Regarding the description:

  • in (5): the path going up to the right is relatively difficult to see, although it is marked, but high up in the trees: don't miss it, as it determines the rest of the route!
  • In (9): correct but ambiguous as it leads to Spitzberg, whereas there is an alternative route that avoids it (specifying this alternative would make the text clearer in my opinion).

In any case, thank you for this hike!
