Saint-Sauves-d’Auvergne from La Bourboule

A route that follows the Dordogne river to Saint-Sauves-d’Auvergne along a wooded path, then a gentle climb up to the ridges with beautiful, sweeping views, before reaching Lac du Pré Cohadon. The walk then takes you through the village of Murat-le-Quaire before returning to La Bourboule, which, when viewed from above, reveals its superb architecture, including the Grands Thermes with their oriental-style domes and the stately mansions.

Description of the route

Departure from La Bourboule coach station, Avenue des États-Unis.

(S/E) Turn right onto Avenue des États-Unis towards the town centre. Go round the roundabout and follow the main road, Boulevard Georges Clémenceau, and, at the thermal baths, turn left into Rue du Professeur Cuvelier.

(1) Cross the bridge over the Dordogne, pass La Bourboule Town Hall and the Tourist Office below, then head up Avenue Agis Ledru. Enter Parc Fenestre through the gate on the left after the car parks, then follow the stream on the right until you reach the footbridge.

(2) Cross the footbridge over the Vendeix stream and follow the ‘Investisons’ path through the woodland.

(3) At the crossroads, take the path veering slightly to the right and continue to the motorhome area at the Chemin de la Suchère car park. Take this path on the left to reach Rue du Curadix, which leads to the junction with the D129.

(4) Continue slightly to the left, cross this departmental road (caution: poor visibility) and take the path on the right (do not enter the farm). Follow it for 150 metres, then take the path on the right which descends towards the Dordogne and follow it for 500 metres.

(5) Pass the reservoir, veer slightly to the right, cross the road at the sewage treatment plant and continue through the woodland. Ignore the path coming from the left and head back down towards the hamlet known as “le Lac”.

(6) At the T-junction, turn left and carry on to the hamlet of Châteauneuf, which you should walk through, veering slightly to the left.

(7) Turn onto a path on the right, pass the cross between two farmhouses to reach Impasse des Buis.

(8) Cross the Route de Tauves (D922), pass the industrial estate and turn right to walk alongside the Pont de Saint-Sauves campsite. Then veer left onto the Chemin des Renardières.

(9) Turn right onto Chemin de la Vergne, cross the Dordogne and take the first path on the right leading up to the church of Saint-Sauves-d’Auvergne.

(10) Carry on, then cross the main road and continue along Rue Simone Veil, then turn right at the corner by the town hall onto Rue Henri Pourrat.

(11) At No. 86, take the cul-de-sac on the left, which becomes the Sentier des Rochettes, leading to the Place du Foirail.

(12) Opposite, take Rue de la Banne d’Ordanche. Carry on straight ahead until you reach the hamlet of Hors.

(13) Turn slightly left, then right to go round the village. Carry on straight ahead, go under the railway bridge on the left, then continue straight on until you reach a crossroads.

(14) Head straight ahead and follow the road as it bends at a right angle, then pass ‘Les Paillers’ on your left. Climb straight up the ridge path and then carry on straight ahead.

(15) Once you reach the Lac du Pré Cohadon car park, go past the spillway and continue along the path to the picnic area. Take the second path on the right and cross the road.

(16) Walk down the Chemin de la Bataille to the hamlet of Pessy.

(17) Continue straight ahead along Rue de la Fontaine, then Route du Collège, and then turn right down Rue du Pesey.

(18) Turn left onto Chemin Godefroi de Bouillon and continue to a junction at the Bourboule cemetery.

(19) Turn left onto Avenue de l’Égalité, then, after the railway bridge, turn left again onto Rue du 19 Mars 1962. At the junction, turn left to reach the La Bourboule coach station (S/E).
