Departure from the car park near the football pitch in Saint-Maximin
(S/E) Follow the yellowPR® sign on the left of the football pitch. The path takes you onto a trail that turns left towards Uzès and passes by a cross. Cross the D305 road with caution and you will come to a fork, which will be the end point of the route on the way back.
(1) Follow the track straight ahead as it winds its way through the heath towards the west and then south-west.
At the right-angle bend, continue straight ahead on the path that plunges into a wood of holm oaks and leads to a track.
(2) Keep right. Cross a small tarmac road on thePR® trail and arrive at a crossroads. Leave thePR® trail, which branches off to the right, and climb straight up a steep path that leads to a DFCI firebreak.
Follow this track to the left, then keep left at each fork until you reach an old carriage road. Turn left again and follow this road for about 200 metres until you reach a crossroads surrounded by low walls.
(3) Follow this road to the right, ignoring any roads that lead off it, pass Château Bérard, continue straight ahead and cross the Alzon stream. Pass the Carrière mill and continue to the right towards "Gisfort", overlooking the valley until you reach a road at a bend.
(4) At the signpost, turn right onto the road that descends slightly, walk past the old mill, then climb between the properties until you reach a road at a wide bend. Ignore it and continue right onto a path and find the André Gide signpost.
(5) Go up to the left on Chemin André Gide, which takes you to Boulevard Victor Hugo at the foot of the cathedral. Follow it to the right, pass the first street on the left and take the next one (Rue de Rafin).
(6) From here, you can take some time to explore the city at your leisure. Saint-Théodorit Cathedral (Rue de l'Évêché), Fenestrelle Tower, Ducal Castle (Place du Duché) – the choice is yours... Turn right onto Rue du Docteur Blanchard until you reach Rue Saint-Julien (D5A), turn left and continue straight on Avenue Maxime Pascal.
(7) Go down to the right into the garden that runs alongside the municipal swimming pool and leave the path on the right. After a few bends, you will reach the banks of the Alzon and follow the river upstream. Cross the small bridge and turn left, then right onto the left bank, following the yellow trail along the remains of the Roman aqueduct that brought water to Nîmes via the Pont du Gard, for about 150 metres.
(8) Turn left onto the path that climbs steeply up "the mountain", quickly leaving a path on either side.
(9) At the end of the plateau, turn left, leaving the path on the right, and continue. Turn right, then pass a cistern about 150 metres away and take a track on the left. Keep left at the intersections to join a larger path that leads to a viewpoint.
(10) From there, take the south-southwest path, which leads back to the wide path taken earlier. Turn left twice to reach a crossroads. Turn right, then right again 50 metres further on, and finally left, heading due south. Follow the yellow trail.
(11) About 450 m further on, turn left, cross the carriageway and zigzag through the pine trees on the main path, leaving the other paths behind.
(12) At the junction of two marked paths, continue left on the one that takes you back to the crossroads you passed on the way there.
(1) Follow the same route as on the way out to complete the circular route (S/E).
