Rowley to Waskerley Station - Durham Round Trail

This is the 7th section of the Durham Round Trail walk. County Durham is well-known for its towns including Bishop Auckland and Barnard Castle as well as Durham City, however today's walk leaves behind the urban areas and heads out into the open countryside. This and the next few sections showcase the wilder side of County Durham. The section continues to follow the C2C cycle path/Waskerley Way and has a number of picnic spots along the way.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Durham Round Trail

Description of the walk

Start : Rowley Station Picnic Area (DH8 9AE) Grid ref. NZ 087 479

(S) From Rowley Station Picnic Area, take the C2C cycle path heading South-West then West.

(1) After 1 Km you will reach Whitehall Picnic Area. Continue on the cycle path, this turns South-West.

(2) After a further 1.5 Km you will reach a bench and a track junction, continue ahead in the South-West direction.

(3) When you reach Redhouse Farm, check to see if Nana B's Tearoom is open. From here, continue for around 750 m following the cycle path South.

Alternative Route: A footpath heads right across the fields from Redhouse Farm. This rejoins the cycle path at the waypoint (5).

(4) At the junction, turn sharp right (West) and stay on the cycle path, the footpath ahead comes to a dead end. The cycle path will then bend right again to head North until it reaches a path junction. This was once a railway junction

(5) The cycle path will now be heading West, continue for a further 1 Km until you reach Waskerley Station Picnic Area (E).
