Lanchester to Ushaw College - Way of Light

This 7th section of the Way of Light begins in the village of Lanchester and crosses farmland, passes nature reserves, the villages of Quebec and Esh Winning and finishes at the entrance to the impressive Ushaw College. This walk is across rolling green fields and passes many farms. It could also be called the walk of the many stiles, gates and cattle grids.

Description of the walk

Start : All Saint's Church, Lanchester (DH7 0LJ) Grid ref. NZ 167 473

(S) From All Saint's Church, walk South-Eastwards along Durham Road passing the medical centre on your right. After 200 m, at the next junction turn right into Woodlands road. At the bend go straigh ahead and rejoin the Lanchester Valley Path, turning left onto this path (South-East). Continue past the sewerage works on your right and under the bridge. 120 m or so after the bridge, look for a footpath to your right down to Waters Meet Nature Reserve, where Peth Burn flows into the River Browney. Follow this path along the riverbank to Malton Picnic area.

(1) Cross the bridge over the River Browney and walk uphill.

(2) After 140m, at the fork in the road, bear right and walk along the front of Officials Terrace. Turn left at the end of the street and follow the path along the edge of Malton Works (South-East) and past Malton Pond and Nature Reserve on your right.

At the end of the path, cross the stile by the information board and turn right (South). The path will enter the trees and then cross another stile. At the edge of the treeline, cross another stile. Then walk diagonnally across to the corner of the field and the farm, crossing two more stiles.

(3) Turn left (South-East) onto the farm track and walk past the farm buildings. After 200 m, turn right at the finger post and pass Plumtree House. Follow the farm track between the fields.

(4) Cross Hamsteels Lane and continue walking South-Westwards crossing Hamsteels Beck. Stay on this path crossing stiles until you reach Quebec, continuing straight across the green as you enter the village.

(5) Turn left onto Front Street, then walk 230m or so to turn right opposite the junction for Langley Park. Follow the track past the house, over the cattle grid and bear left following the track South-Eastwards. Cross the cattle grids.

(6) Turn left at Heugh Farm and follow the track first North-East and then North-West. At the fork, bear right (North-East).

(7) Cross the stile and bear left around Esh Hall and farm crossing Hall Lane and continuing Eastwards on the track. You will pass another house on your right stay on this track.

(8) Continue walking in this direction past Low Esh Farm crossing the stile onto a footpath at the end of the farmyard.

(9) Climb one last stile and turn right onto Woodland Road. Turn left in front of the cottages onto College Road.

(10) Turn right at the information board. Walk South down the track and through the gate back onto Woodland Road. Turn left and make your way to the main entrace to Ushaw College (E).

Transport: There is parking for visitors only at Ushaw College. there is also parking at the Malton Picnic Area near the beginning of the walk. However as you will probably need to take bus back to Durham to return to the start point, parking in Durham City is a possibility.

Buses leave from outside the main gates, service 52 (Gateshead Central Taxis) is infrequent. More frequent services can be picked up from Bearpark further down Woodland Road service 48 (Arriva) and from nearby Ushaw service 43 (Arriva), you will need to walk down Broadgate Road opposite Ushaw Farm.

Facilities: This is a rural walk, there are no facilities along the way. There is a cafe and a pub in Lanchester and a cafe at Ushaw College.

Accessibility: A large part of this walk is across agricultural land with many stiles and some cattle grids. Some paths are tarmac, some gravel and some grass which can be very muddy in wet weather.

Accommodation: In Lanchester The Kings Head and the Old Post Office are options. Burnhopeside Hall can be found just past Malton Picnic Area. There are also a number of hotels in Durham including the Premier Inn, Raddisson, Hotel Indigo and the Marriott. There are a number of cottage rentals around Ushaw College.

In the nearby area

  • All Saints' Church, Lanchester - the starting point for the walk is the beautiful Anglican church on the outskirts of Lanchester. Please note that the Catholic church is also called All Saints too.
  • Some of the walk follows the Lanchester Valley Railway Walk which you can explore further before continuing the walk.
  • Malton Picnic Area and Car Park, a good place to park. This is a scenic spot for a picnic by Waters Meet on the River Brownie.
  • Malton Nature Reserve - this has been developed on an old colliery site and includes a pond.
  • Ushaw College - This former seminary is now a vibrant visitor attraction with events, art gallery, chapel and gardens.
