Description of the walk

Start : Waskerley Station Picnic Area (DH8 9DZ) Grid ref. NZ 050 453

(S) From the Waskerley Station Picnic Area, join the Waskerley Way/C2C Cycle Route heading West.

(1) After approximately 2 Km you will reach the Waskerley Way Car Park, continue on the cycle path which now turns South-West.

Alternative Route: a single track road leads from the car park on the Waskerley Way down to a second car park by the Reservoir. If you wish to get a closer view, follow this single track road southwest. From the reservoir car park, take the track heading northwest which will rejoin the Waskerley Way at the waypoint (3).

(2) The route will pass through the Frosterley Cut (to keep railway lines level, cuttings were made through rocky landscapes), keep heading South-West. Look to your left for views of Waskerley Reservoir. Continue straight to reach a junction.

(3) At this track junction continue South-West. if you went to visit the reservoir, turn left here to rejoin the cycle path. Otherwise, continue walking for a further 2 Km until you reach Parkhead Station Picnic Area and cafe (E).

In the nearby area

The visit down to Waskerly Reservoir is worth the walk. The scenery here is very different to that passed on the route so far, being open moorland. This and the previous few sections have steadily climbed towards the Pennines.
