Description of the walk

Rouge Gazon car park.

(S/E) From the Rouge Gazon car park, take the path opposite the hotel-restaurant overlooking the road you arrived on. This is theGR®531, marked with a Blue Rectangle; walk for about 600 m, heading north-west, until you reach a Fork in the road.

(1) Leave theGR®531and continue to the left. Follow the Blue ‘Les Charbonniers’ trail towards Saint-Maurice. Continue for about 300 m until you reach a junction just before a right-hand bend.

(2) Turn right towards Bussang (mountain bike route no. 15). Further on, the path joins theGR®531. Carry on for a few hundred metres and you’ll see the first Neufs-Bois pond on the left-hand side of the track.

(3) Take the path on the right which climbs up to La Chaume des Neufs-Bois.

(4) Enjoy the peace and beauty of the scenery.
Then retrace your steps back to the first pond.

(3) Follow the path on the right which runs alongside this pond for about a hundred metres until you reach a junction.

(5) Carry on straight ahead, skirting the second pond, and continue down to the third one below.

(6) After a well-deserved short break in this green paradise, retrace your steps.

(5) Turn right onto the path between the first and second ponds; it runs alongside the first pond. Enter the forest; the path heads south-west. After about 500 metres, look to your right and admire the Chaume des Neufs-Bois opposite. Keep going in the same direction until you reach the Col des Mineurs (signpost).

(7) Take the path furthest to the left (mountain bike routes nos. 17 and 18). A few hundred metres further on, you’ll come to the junction you passed on the way out.

(2) Carry straight on along the track, in the opposite direction to your outward journey. Further on, the path turns right and joins theGR®531.

(1) Turn right, heading in the opposite direction to your outward journey, to reach La Chaume du Rouge Gazon and the car park (S/E).

When we arrived at the car park, we saw about thirty cars. On the route, there was no one. The reason: they’d all gone to Lac des Perches. Just as well – we were able to enjoy complete peace and quiet. A very relaxing romantic picnic by the ponds, where we admired the fish’s aquatic ballet. What a heavenly spot, especially the third pond, situated at the foot of the magnificent Chaume. Alternative route: instead of turning back to go between the first and second ponds, you can turn left immediately after the third and then turn right to climb up to the Col des Mineurs.
Truly a lovely walk suitable for everyone!

Hello everyone!
Below you’ll find a link to a slideshow of a short walk which, last Sunday 18 February, starting from the ‘4 Saisons’ resort at Rouge-Gazon, allowed us to enjoy a few hours of peace and relaxation in the heart of the Chaume des Neufs-Bois conservation area, with its peat bog, three ponds and more…
This is a remarkable site in the Vosges, undoubtedly one of the last, at an altitude of over 1,100 metres, to harbour such a wealth of flora and fauna, representative of the Hautes Vosges, and a lush green setting offering some lovely views – provided, of course, that the weather permits.
Unfortunately, for nearly a year now, this natural area has been at the centre of a legal dispute between the municipality of Saint-Maurice/Moselle, a hotel investor and the Conservatoire des Espaces Naturels de Lorraine; the latter is determined to save one of the last essential and truly wild links in the chain of protection for the Hautes Vosges. Hence our idea to explore the area to better understand what is going on there and to tell you all about it...
As you’ll see on the map in the slideshow, today’s walk was due to continue via the Col des Perches and Lake Sternsee, then on to the Haute Bers; however, the bad weather, driven in from the west by violent gusts, forced us to cut the outing short halfway through and seek shelter in the warmth over coffee and cake in Saint-Maurice-sur-Moselle. But we’ll be back one day…
Take care.
