Rochechinard and the Col Des Marchands

A pleasant walk to explore Rochechinard Castle, with beautiful views of Musan Mountain on one side and the Drôme des Collines plain on the return journey to the Col des Marchands.

Description of the walk

Head towards the Rochechinard cemetery and park in the museum car park.

(S/E) From the car park, take the stony path on the left, markedGRP®, and walk past the information boards. Continue to the first hairpin bend.

(1) Ignore the path on the right and continue along the winding track. When you reach stone no. 2255 (Revols), keep to the right and continue along the winding path to a gate.

(2) Leave theGRP® and go straight on, passing through the gate. Continue to a fork (hunting reserve sign).

(3) Turn due south, then south-west, skirting a long meadow, and arrive at a cairn.

(4) Take the path on the right. The path climbs steeply to an altitude of 1,009 m and then descends to the Col des Marchands.

(5) Walk across the meadow, then turn right at the signpost and follow theGRP® path, which ends at a gate.

(6) Go through it, taking care to close it properly behind you, and arrive at a fork.

(7) Head due north towards Les Berthonnettes until you leave theGRP® (alt. 870 m).

(8) Turn right and head towards Les Berthonnettes.

(9) Immediately after the sheepfold, turn right and head towards Les Grandes Étoubles.

(10) Pass between the two buildings and continue north-east until you reach a fork.

(11) Head right onto the grassy path and, a little further on, follow the signs for Château de Rochechinard to begin a long, winding descent until you reach a fork.

(12) At the junction, turn left towards the château (be careful not to enter the site). Go round the château via a small path that climbs to the left, then descends towards a main track.

(13) Turn right onto a fairly steep descent towards Rochechinard, until you reach a ruin.

(14) Take the tarmac road (Chemin du Bois Savoyard) on the right, which leads back towards the starting point (S/E).

A lovely walk, easy to follow. The descents are slippery in wet weather. I didn't have any walking poles, which would have been very useful. Thank you to the author.

A lovely walk with good paths, no tarmac (which is rare), and lovely views of the Monts du Matin and the St Marcellin plain. The highlight is the arrival at the Col des Marchands, with its superb grassy area and views over the Baume-d’Hostun valley.

The start of the walk at the museum and church in Rochechinard is very pleasant.
